While the fictional Adam and Olive have plenty of moments where Dr. Adam Carlsen gets to play the professor and teach Olive a thing or two, their real-life counterparts have happily flipped the script. Ahead of The Love Hypothesis, Lili Reinhart has taken on a rather unexpected teaching assignment: giving Tom Bateman a crash course in the strange and wonderful world of fan edits.

Tom Bateman has signed up to play a brilliant Stanford professor in the movie, but promoting one of the internet’s favorite romance novels apparently required an entirely different education, excellence in fan edits.  Luckily for Bateman, his co-star Lili Reinhart seems more than qualified to serve as his professor when the subject switches from science to social media.

During an Entertainment Tonight interview, Lili Reinhart proudly took “full credit” for introducing Bateman to TikTok before testing whether he had finally ventured into his own fan-edit territory. His answer made it clear that his crash course was still very much in progress. When Reinhart asked whether he knew what a fan edit was, Bateman admitted being unaware of what a fan edit even means.

Reinhart took less than a second to play professor, telling him how she saw a fan edit of him just yesterday in his Notting Hill T-shirt from The Love Hypothesis promotions. While for Bateman, fan edits translated as a "little vignette movie," Reinhart had to tell him honestly that it means that fans think he is hot., “I don’t know what a fan edit is.” That prompted the very natural follow-up: “What is a fan edit?”

“They’re thirsting for you,” she said.

So, while Bateman may still need a few more lessons before he can confidently navigate fan-edit culture, as seen in the interview, Reinhart appears to have made sure he understands the most important part.

Bateman may have needed an introduction to fan culture, but his and Reinhart's The Love Hypothesis TikToks quickly gave them a front-row seat.

While the fan-edit territory is fairly new for Tom Bateman, his and Lili Reinhart's TikToks have been a sensation during their shoot of The Love Hypothesis. During a conversation with Harper's Bazaar US, Reinhart was asked about her favorite video she made with Bateman, and she immediately picked “the picking up one, where he was carrying me.” The clip reportedly racked up around 80 million views, giving Bateman another firsthand lesson in just how quickly their Love Hypothesis content can take over the internet.

"You indulged me, and I appreciate that," Reinhart said. Bateman, however, insisted that being game for TikToks was hardly a hardship, saying, “You’re always game.”

From learning what fan edits are to accidentally misspelling TikTok, Bateman’s social-media crash course alongside Reinhart has clearly come with plenty of homework. The Love Hypothesis follows biology Ph.D. student Olive Smith and intimidating professor Adam Carlsen as fake dating takes an unexpected turn. The film premieres on Prime Video in a few hours today.
