Bill Burr has a front-row seat to the world of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network. But while Burr plays a member of the crisis communications team dealing with Zuckerberg, portrayed by Jeremy Strong, the comedian also got a glimpse of the actor’s much-discussed approach to his craft.

Strong is known for his commitment to method acting, and Burr has a rather amusing way of looking at the practice.

Bill Burr's take on Jeremy Strong’s method acting

Bill Burr was asked in a recent conversation with Variety whether he had met Jeremy Strong before filming wrapped or whether he had only interacted with the actor as Zuckerberg. He explained that he had previously seen Strong in the Broadway production of An Enemy of the People and met him there. However, when it came to the mystique surrounding method acting, Burr seemed less concerned with whether Strong stayed in character off-camera.

“That whole mystique around [Method acting] — you know, they’re playing Winnie the Pooh and they were Winnie the Pooh the whole time. Was that weird? I mean, I don’t need to be playing hacky sack with somebody in between takes,” Burr said.

He went on to explain that actors have different ways of working. Some are happy to chat and joke around until it is time to deliver their lines, while others prefer to keep to themselves or find a quiet spot between takes. Having spent years in the industry, Burr has become accustomed to those differences.

But Burr’s laid-back attitude toward Strong’s method acting is only one side of his approach to navigating The Social Reckoning’s world of tech billionaires. When it comes to Zuckerberg himself, the comedian has another rule he is not willing to compromise on.

Bill Burr has a reason to keep Mark Zuckerberg at a distance

Bill Burr’s comments about Jeremy Strong’s method acting come as he takes on a role in a film centered on Zuckerberg and the controversies surrounding Facebook. But the comedian has also made it clear that playing in the tech billionaire’s orbit does not mean he wants a personal relationship with him.

At the premiere of The Social Reckoning, Burr was asked whether he would consider having Zuckerberg on his podcast. His answer was an immediate no.

“Nothing’s free. You don’t want to have a relationship. Because then, all of a sudden, you have a friendship and you can’t make fun of them,” he said.

For Burr, maintaining that separation is important to his comedy. Getting too close to someone he might want to joke about could complicate the freedom to make fun of them later. With The Social Reckoning bringing these perspectives together, Burr is offering audiences plenty to talk about both on and off screen.
