Jesse Tyler Ferguson's portrayal of Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family became one of television's most beloved performances, with his dry wit and permanently anxious expressions powering countless hilarious moments. His chemistry with Eric Stonestreet's Cameron Tucker turned domestic disasters into comedic gold across 11 seasons.
Today, imagining another actor playing Mitchell feels like replacing Batman's cape with a bathrobe. Yet Ferguson recently revealed that securing the role required a battle before he even entered the audition room. Apparently, Hollywood's casting machinery had already decided which half of the iconic couple he should play.
And Ferguson had entirely different plans.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson reveals how he almost lost the role of Mitchell Pritchett
During the latest episode of his Dinner's on Me podcast, Ferguson told guest Jane Leeves that the Modern Family casting team initially wanted him to audition for Cameron, the flamboyant character eventually portrayed by Eric Stonestreet. However, Ferguson believed Mitchell suited his abilities perfectly.
“They did not want to see me for Mitchell,” he recalled.

The problem apparently involved a failed Fox pilot as per Ferguson's confession on Dinner's on Me. Ferguson had recently participated in a project that bombed, leaving casting decision-makers with reservations about giving him another opportunity. In sitcom terms, his previous professional disappointment had followed him home and changed the locks.
Fortunately, casting director Jeff Greenberg stepped in like a superhero armed with nothing except excellent judgment and considerable persistence.Ferguson explained that Greenberg pushed for him to receive an audition for Mitchell, urging the team to reconsider their reluctance. Eventually, he got his chance and landed the role that would define his television career.
And the creative minds who helped build that iconic television family are preparing another spectacularly unusual sitcom.
Modern Family creators reunite for a new comedy called Mammoth
Christopher Lloyd and Danny Zuker are returning to the sitcom arena with Mammoth, a comedy whose protagonist has apparently taken the concept of being stuck in the past rather literally. Fox ordered the series in September 2026, adapting the British comedy created by Welsh comedian Mike Bubbins.

The premise follows Tony Mammoth, a high-school gym teacher buried beneath an avalanche in 1983. Forty years later, he thaws out and discovers that society has undergone several updates without consulting him. Armed with a Burt Reynolds-style mustache, his beloved Trans-Am, and an extraordinary commitment to outdated masculinity, Tony returns to teaching.
Lloyd and Zuker will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunners, with Bubbins also executive producing. Fox has scheduled Mammoth for the 2027–28 television season, although specific casting announcements and an exact premiere date remain outstanding.
