Matt Damon portrays the legendary Greek hero Odysseus during his historic 10-year journey home following the brutal Trojan War in The Odyssey (2026). The actor is known to have shed over 30 Lbs to achieve his original high school weight of 167 Lbs for the role. Damon achieved this goal by strictly managing his daily nutritional intake, noting a severe dietary restriction regarding gluten.

“Sadly, there's no shortcut. It's all diet and and exercise. I'm like highly allergic to gluten,” Damon told Entertainment Tonight of his shredding process.

His fellow cast members expressed complete amazement upon witnessing his shredded physique during the initial days of film production. When asked by E! News Fashion Cam's Justin Sylvester how Damon responded when Christopher Nolan called and told him he needed to be bare, the actor only confirmed the question's origins as he quoted himself as asking how much time he had to be shirtless on screen.

Co-stars noted that his defined abdominal muscles were easily visible even through loose, ordinary clothing while speaking to Entertainment Tonight.

“The first day I turned up, I'm like, ‘How can I see abs? You got a loose T-shirt on,” Robert Pattinson recalled of Damon to Entertainment Tonight. His intense physical transformation ultimately allowed him to confidently execute the gruelling demands of being in a Christopher Nolan production.

The acclaimed director intentionally selected this specific Hollywood veteran to embody the complex strategic leader.

Shifting from Bourne to mythological legend

Matt Damon was perfect for Odysseus because of his rare ability to blend the gritty capability of an action star with relatable vulnerability. This unique duality perfectly captures the identity of a flawed, clever veteran who is deeply haunted by his past combat choices. The character stands not as an invincible idol, but as a deeply human tactician trying to survive.

His extensive history portraying a highly capable warrior in The Bourne Identity (2002) made his complex ancient combat sequences completely believable. Audiences also instantly accept him as a master strategist due to his legacy of playing brilliant masterminds since Good Will Hunting (1997). Christopher Nolan masterfully leveraged his natural likability to humanize the massive trauma and guilt plaguing the warrior.

And upon reaching the spectacular high-school weight, his co-stars were as awestruck as any fan seeking The Odyssey would be.
