DC Studios is building a new superhero universe where familiar comic book legends and unexpected casting choices will help define its next chapter. Alan Ritchson, best known for bringing the formidable Jack Reacher to life, has become a recurring name in conversations about James Gunn’s DCU. Now, co-CEO Peter Safran has offered fresh insight into what makes the actor an intriguing prospect for the franchise.
For anyone who has watched Ritchson command a room with a single intimidating stare, Safran’s comments suggest that his appeal extends beyond the imposing physical presence that has made him a fan-casting favorite.
Peter Safran sees untapped potential in Alan Ritchson
Speaking to Collider in a recent interview, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran addressed the possibility of Alan Ritchson joining the franchise and acknowledged that discussions had taken place.
“We talked about a couple things, but nothing that's come to fruition at this point…I also think there's a lot more depth to him than you might have seen. I think there's more that he can do that people haven't seen,” Safran said.

That final observation is particularly interesting for an actor whose screen persona is frequently associated with brute strength and action-heavy roles. As Jack Reacher in Prime Video’s adaptation of Lee Child’s novels, Ritchson has established himself as a formidable action lead, but Safran appears interested in the possibilities beyond that familiar image. His comments on Collider do not confirm a casting decision or identify a character, but they suggest that DC Studios has considered how the actor might fit into its developing universe.
However, the kind of character Ritchson wants to play may prove just as important as the interest coming from DC Studios. The actor has previously made it clear that he is not simply looking for another role built around a conventional superhero image, and his latest career developments offer a glimpse into the choices shaping his next chapter.
Alan Ritchson wanted a messier role beyond Reacher
In a November 2025 interview with Screen Rant, Alan Ritchson confirmed that he had discussed potential roles with DC Studios and expressed a preference for morally complicated characters.
“I want to play somebody a little messier,” he explained, adding that he wanted someone “a little dirtier than your typical clean-cut protagonist.”
That ambition could open the door to characters far removed from the straightforward hero archetype, although DC Studios has not announced a role for him.

Ritchson’s career has also taken an unexpected turn outside the superhero world. According to recent reporting by Variety, the actor exited Netflix’s Maelstrom, an action thriller centred on a federal marshal protecting an arms dealer’s fiancée during a hurricane. The reason for his departure has not been disclosed. While the development does not establish any connection to his DC discussions. It adds another question mark to an already busy career as audiences wait to see which projects he pursues next.
For now, Safran’s praise offers encouragement rather than a casting confirmation.
