'The Wrecking Crew' Director Hints at a Possible 'Blue Beetle' Return

Fresh off the magnificent success of The Wrecking Crew, Ángel Manuel Soto, who brought DC Comics' Blue Beetle to life, has divulged on the future of Jaime Reyes and his superhero identity through his scarab-powered abilities. The movie achieved moderate box office success. Yet it had a significant cultural impact, marking the first superhero film with a Latino lead and introducing audiences to a new DC Universe character.
Soto confirmed that conversations are ongoing about Blue Beetle’s place in the newly rebooted DCU under James Gunn’s direction.

Filmmaker Ángel Manuel Soto explained to The Wrap that James Gunn has a strong interest in Blue Beetle, although he cannot provide exact details about it. Gunn publicly confirmed through other statements that Blue Beetle will continue to exist in DC Universe plans for future development.
"I don’t think that chapter has been closed. I’ve had friendly conversations with Peter Safran and John Rickard. And I know James is a huge fan of Blue Beetle, and he’s said multiple times that Blue Beetle is part of the DCU," Soto told the outlet.
DC Studios is currently discussing Jaime Reyes' return in both live-action and animated formats, although no sequel has been officially announced. The Blue Beetle character fits well into DC Universe plans, so rest assured, the studio will likely expand the universe created in the original film.
"I think that you can do so much with animation, and it’s also a fun medium that I’ve always wanted to explore. So if the movie gods and the people and our dear friends at DC and Warner Bros. see it fit, I would love nothing more than to continue to tell that story," Soto revealed to the outlet.
The director described how the movie impacted his career because it opened new opportunities for him to explore in terms of storytelling. Its cultural impact extended to how viewers recognized their own identities through the film, which created a lasting impression, thus fueling anticipation for what comes next for the Latino superhero.
While the new DCU under James Gunn ponders reviving the endlessly charming saga of Blue Beetle, amid several exciting projects lined up, the 2023 film is very much alive in the minds of fans.

The movie debuted in theatres on August 18 2023, and later became accessible for digital purchase and rental soon after. In 2026, Blue Beetle became available for streaming in the US on Max, with Netflix hosting the film in some regions.
