‘The Wizard of Kremlin’ Sets May Release Date Featuring Jude Law as Vladimir Putin
Hollywood has long leaned on political thrillers to dissect power, from the sharp satire of Vice to the tense, fact-driven dramas that examine real-world elections, corruption, and backroom deals. Films like The Insider, Fair Game, and The Report have shown that audiences respond to stories that blend investigative grit with strong performances.
Now, the genre is turning its gaze toward Russia and the rise of Vladimir Putin in The Wizard of the Kremlin.

The political drama The Wizard of the Kremlin has set its North American theatrical release for May 15, 2026, with Jude Law portraying Vladimir Putin in a stylized account of his rise during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Directed by Olivier Assayas, the film centers on a fictional TV producer turned political strategist, Vadim Baranov, played by Paul Dano.
The narrative explores how media manipulation and image-building helped shape Putin’s ascent in 1990s Russia. Adapted from Le Mage du Kremlin, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Alicia Vikander, Tom Sturridge, and Jeffrey Wright. Their performances anchor a story that blends psychological drama with geopolitical tension.
Rather than a sweeping historical retelling, Assayas presents the film as an intimate study of power and influence. The project premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2025, where Law’s portrayal earned a ten-minute standing ovation and strong critical buzz. Early reactions highlight the film’s measured pacing and its refusal to offer simple judgments. Instead, it focuses on how narrative, fear, and control can shape a political system over time.
As global political storytelling gains momentum, another major project is exploring power from a very different perspective.
Netflix’s Kennedy series explores American political dynasty
Netflix is developing a prestige biopic-style series titled Kennedy, which will trace the rise of one of America’s most influential political families. The series stars Michael Fassbender as Joe Kennedy Sr. and draws from JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917–1956. The story spans from the 1930s onward, charting the family’s ambition, rivalries, and personal struggles.

The eight-episode first season, currently filming in London, focuses on the early life of John F. Kennedy. It explores his formative years and the pressures of growing up within a powerful and competitive family. The show is described as a character-driven drama that balances political events with intimate personal storytelling.
Where The Wizard of the Kremlin examines the construction of power in modern Russia, Kennedy offers a parallel look at leadership within an American dynasty. Both projects use biographical storytelling to explore how influence is built and maintained across different systems. Together, they reflect a broader trend of revisiting political history through a cinematic lens.
