‘The Walking D---’s’ Greg Nicotero Hints at a Reunion Spinoff - "We’ve Been Talking About It"

The undead may have shuffled off the main stage, but the whispers of a grand reunion suggest that the most iconic survivors are far from finished. The Walking Dead universe has transformed from a singular survival tale into a sprawling global epic with multiple successful spin-offs. And yet, fans have long speculated whether these diverging paths would ever cross again, especially after the emotional conclusion of the primary series.
The director and executive producers are now dropping substantial hints that the story of Rick Grimes was only the beginning of a much larger plan.
The legendary visionary behind the scenes, Greg Nicotero, is finally addressing the potential for a massive character crossover.

The vision for a grand character reunion of The Walking D--- universe
During a recent discussion with The Brandon Davis Show on the episode The Walking Dead: Honest Takes on Glenn, Negan, and Rick's Future, long-time director Greg Nicotero shared his thoughts on the possibility of a special reunion project.
“I mean, we’ve been talking about it for a couple of years,” Nicotero stated. He noted that although the Civic Republic Military storyline concluded back in 2024, internal discussions regarding a massive ensemble return have persisted for several years, even before the spin-offs were put to action, according to Nicotero.
The director explained that the concept of following the journey of Rick Grimes was originally envisioned as a high-budget feature film. This potential series would likely serve as a spiritual successor to the original narrative by bringing together fragmented groups. The focus remains on the emotional resonance of seeing legendary figures navigate a world that has evolved significantly since they last stood together.
Executive leaders of The Walking Dead franchise are, in fact, looking toward a future where every surviving hero eventually shares the screen again.
The fifteen-year roadmap for The Walking Dead franchise
Franchise overseer Scott Gimple has previously expressed a desire to see the various spin-offs merge into a single, cohesive narrative thread. During a New York Comic Con appearance, he suggested that there exists a vision that involves these independent stories converging in a significant way.
"I am not against it”, when asked about a potential 12th season of the flagship show, Gimple remarked.
Gimple also shared with Variety that the evolution of the survivors over a long period remains one of the most exciting aspects of the job. He noted that the characters could eventually visit other continents, as the varying locations often provide fresh inspiration for the ongoing struggle against the undead.
