The Violinist made history at Annecy 2026, becoming Singapore's first ever feature to win the festival's top prize, the Cristal for a Feature Film. Iron Boy did not leave empty-handed either, walking away with three major honors of its own on the same night. Directed by Ervin Han and Raúl García, The Violinist beat strong competition, including In Waves, Viva Carmen, and Iron Boy, all of which were previous Cannes favorites. The win also marked a rare triple-nation collaboration across Singapore, Spain, and Italy.

Iron Boy collected three honors at the ceremony, including the Jury Award, the Audience Award for the feature, and the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution. Directed by Louis Clichy, a former Pixar animator behind WALL-E and Up, the film follows eleven-year-old Christophe and his struggle with a metal back brace. The story has already won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize, fueling fresh talk of awards-season contention. The Violinist added one more trophy to its own tally, taking home the SACEM Award for Best Original Soundtrack.

The packed 1,400 capacity Bonlieu theatre even broke into a birthday song, marking the comedian's 65th birthday on the same day. Alley Cats follows a group of stray British cats navigating modern life, with Gervais writing, directing, and voicing a cynical ginger tomcat named Gus. Gervais reached out personally to Morrissey and Johnny Marr for music clearance, aiming to give the short lives of his feline characters real emotional weight. He recorded dialogue with the full cast in one room, pushing for a natural, conversational tone instead of typical animated delivery. The comedian also praised Netflix for greenlighting the project and openly hoped for a second season. From The Violinist's historic Cristal to Iron Boy's sweep and Gervais's feline triumph, Annecy 2026 proved every kind of story could win big.
