The Super Mario Galaxy Movie set new box office records by generating $34 million on its first Wednesday, which now stands as the highest April Wednesday opening in box office history, according to Deadline. The film's strong opening results indicate that it will achieve a successful five-day opening, which could become one of the most significant movie openings for 2026.

Reports suggest it could make more than $180 million in North America. The sequel to 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie has already outperformed the original, which opened at $31.7 million, as well as bested Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary, which earned $33.1 million on Friday.

If The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follows the same fate, it could rake in up to a billion dollars the fastest, as The Super Mario Bros Movie went on to earn $574.9 million in North America, $785.9 million internationally, and a $1.4 billion worldwide in total. The success of this film would place the franchise in the ranks of Shrek, Toy Story, and Minions as the fastest animated films to achieve a Friday-Sunday gross of more than $100 million.

Universal Pictures and Nintendo co-financed the film, which had a budget of $110 million, with Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri being among the producers. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic helmed the sequel with a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel. However, it is inevitable to keep the entire constellation of Hollywood's A-list stars who have pulled the crowd to this sequel with their voice acting.
