The "Shameful" Oscar Moment Amy Madigan Will Never Forget

Amy Madigan, as the eerie Aunt Gladys in Weapons, has both frightened and impressed audiences, winning the Best Supporting Actress award. However, an Oscar win had come close to her earlier as well, when she was nominated for Twice in a Lifetime. But among all her Oscar moments, one of the most talked-about incidents remains from 1999.
Madigan and her husband, Ed Harris, made a gesture when famed director Elia Kazan was presented with an honorary Oscar that would have likely gone viral on social media if it had happened today. Years later, the actress finally opened up about what had happened that night.

When director Elia Kazan was presented with an honorary Oscar, most of the audience stood up to applaud him. However, Amy Madigan and her husband, Ed Harris, maintained expressionless faces and chose not to clap. In her recent interview with The Envelope podcast, the actress shared that she did not agree with the honor.
“My dad was a newspaperman, a journalist, a political analyst, and he, as a very young man, covered the McCarthy hearings, and it really affected him, and he didn't talk about it too much, and I have pictures from it, and I'm very familiar with that period of time and what happened during that period of time, especially to people in my industry,” she said.
“So I had very definite feelings about it, and I thought it was wrongheaded and really somewhat shameful of the academy to do that," she further added.
Although she did not mention it, the actress may have been hinting at the time when the director avoided the Hollywood blacklist by giving up the names of the eight colleagues as former Communist Party members before the House Un-American Activities Committee. She added that her reaction drew attention because both she and Ed Harris were sitting together, but noted that there may have been others in the audience who felt the same way.
The actress has always been candid about her opinions and life, just as she was while speaking about the offers after her Oscar nomination.
Amy Madigan’s honest response to offers after new fame
Amy Madigan’s Actors Award and Oscar win have introduced her to a new generation of fans and brought a new spotlight to her work. However, that visibility has not necessarily translated into an incredible surge of new offers for her. The actress opened up about it in her interview with People.
“I’ve been asked a lot: ‘Your inbox must be just filled with scripts?’ No, that is not true. There have been some, of course,” she said.
“I think the really nice thing about this attention is that I’m much, much, much more in people’s conversations.”

Now, Madigan is far from a new face in Hollywood, having shown memorable performances in Twice in a Lifetime. Over her four-decade career, she has shown her versatility time and again with Field of Dreams, Uncle Buck, and more films. So whichever roles Madigan takes on next, they are sure to be as fascinating as Aunt Gladys.
