Bella Thorne has spent much of her career living under a microscope. More than a decade after Shake It Up made Bella Thorne and Zendaya household names, Thorne is looking back at one of the most talked about chapters of their friendship with a perspective shaped by experience rather than tabloid narratives.

During her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper, Bella Thorne revisited the intense pressure she and Zendaya faced while starring together on Disney Channel's Shake It Up. Rather than blaming one another, Thorne pointed to a much larger problem within the entertainment industry. 

“With women it’s like, ‘We have to make you all beg for one spot …. The patriarchy has been doing it since the beginning of time. You go back and we were 12! What’s wrong with you? We are supposed to be best friends. We play best friends. It got pretty bad…”, she said. 

One of the most revealing moments from the conversation was Thorne's recollection of filming the Good Luck Charlie crossover episode. She revealed that she and Zendaya, who recently played Athena in The Odyssey, secretly slipped away from the live taping between scenes to finally speak honestly with each other. That private conversation, she said, became her first real experience of women communicating openly instead of allowing outside voices to define their relationship. 

Shake It Up, which aired from 2010 to 2013, introduced the pair as aspiring dancers CeCe Jones and Rocky Blue, quickly making them two of Disney's brightest young stars. While fans often celebrated their chemistry, media narratives frequently framed them as rivals, something both actresses have addressed over the years.

While reflecting on her past, Bella Thorne also made it clear that her focus is firmly on the future. During the same podcast appearance, she confirmed that she is writing, directing, and starring in Spring Breakers 2. 

“The producers watched ‘Color Your Hurt,’ which is the movie that I just wrapped, an early cut of it, and they asked me to write something to see if they would like it and they loved it, and now I’m writing and directing ‘Spring Breakers 2,” she said.  

Thorne also explained why she believes the sequel will feel different from the 2012 original. She described that era as deeply exploitative, recalling how stars such as Miley Cyrus, Zendaya, Selena Gomez, and even Amanda Bynes were constantly compared and labeled as Hollywood's next "bad girl." This time, she says, female voices are shaping the creative direction, bringing what she called unmistakable "female energy" to the project. 

Bella Thorne's latest interview is more than a nostalgic look back at Disney Channel. It is also a reflection on how Hollywood has evolved and how she hopes to reshape it from behind the camera.
