The Odyssey is closing in on the kind of box office territory that only Christopher Nolan's Batman films have ever touched. Nolan's mythological epic has spent weeks climbing the global charts with a steadiness few 2026 releases can match. Audiences keep returning to IMAX screens in droves, and the numbers keep climbing without any sign of slowing. This kind of run rarely comes from a nearly three-hour, R-rated retelling of ancient myth.
While Batman kept Gotham's box office throne warm for over a decade, Homer's ancient odyssey is quietly rewriting Nolan's commercial legacy this summer.
The Odyssey nears Christopher Nolan's billion dollar milestone
The Odyssey is set to cross one billion dollars worldwide, a mark previously reserved only for Christopher Nolan's two Batman sequels. The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises earned roughly one billion and 1.08 billion dollars, respectively, standing alone atop his filmography for over a decade. Oppenheimer came closest to breaking that streak, settling near 976 million dollars without quite reaching the summit. The Odyssey has now done what none of his original stories managed before.

Beyond the milestone itself, the film arrived with the biggest global opening of Nolan's career and has held remarkably well in the weeks since. Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, joined by Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson in an ensemble built for scale. Remaining international markets are still contributing steadily, pushing the tally higher with each passing day. Few films this dense in mythology manage such consistent staying power.
Such staying power did not come cheap, and the numbers behind the camera are just as staggering.
The Odyssey's budget reveals the true scale of Christopher Nolan's ambition
The Odyssey carried a production budget of 250 million dollars, making it the most expensive film of Christopher Nolan's entire career. Filming entirely on 70mm IMAX equipment pushed costs into rare territory, with raw stock priced near 1.50 dollars per foot across two million feet of footage, totalling roughly 3 million dollars. Individual theatrical prints added further expense, running about 50,000 dollars apiece for large-format distribution. Few studios would greenlight numbers this extreme for a single release.

IMAX screenings alone generated over 140 million dollars of the film's global haul, proving the costly format paid for itself many times over. Universal backed the risk fully, knowing that audiences would embrace a lengthy, mythological epic made the hard way. That has paid off handsomely, with the worldwide total now closing in fast on Nolan's Batman-sized benchmark. The billion-dollar record chase is nearly over.
