The Na--- Gun sequel faces a corporate roadblock
Director Akiva Schaffer recently shared some discouraging updates with CBR concerning the future of the rebooted franchise during a red-carpet appearance. He explained that the recent acquisition of Paramount has created a period of uncertainty that has stalled any immediate plans for a continuation.
“We are not planning another”, he shared to CBR, noting that the ownership change occurred just one week after the film debuted.
Despite the current lack of a green light, the writing team remains prepared with a wealth of comedic material. Schaffer noted that Dan Gregor and Doug Mand have already compiled an extensive list of gags intended for a future script.
According to CBR, Producer Erica Huggins also confirmed that the team has discussed a major conceptual hook for the next chapter, should the studio eventually decide to move forward. For now, the creative team is simply waiting to see if the new leadership at the studio shares their vision for more chaos.
"We have a big idea that we had talked about." Erica Huggins said to CBR.
The current uncertainty is a sharp contrast to the decades of stability this franchise has enjoyed since its inception.
Legacy of slapstick spanning four decades of The Na--- Gun franchise
The universe began as a brief 1982 television experiment before exploding into a cinematic powerhouse with the 1988 debut of The Na--- Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!
Across the original trilogy, audiences watched Frank Drebin protect Queen Elizabeth II, battle energy moguls, and even go undercover at the Academy Awards in 1994's The Final Insult. The franchise eventually expanded into mobile gaming and saw a high-profile revival in August 2025, where Liam Neeson took the mantle as Frank Drebin Jr. to continue the tradition of deadpan parody.

The 2025 reboot honored this tradition by maintaining the same frantic energy and commitment to nonsensical dialogue. Whether the badge is officially retired or just temporarily shelved, the impact of the Drebin family on the world of film is undeniable.
