This live-action version of Enid Blyton's cherished children's book series, The Magic Faraway Tree, releases on March 27, 2026. The story explores more than just a fascinating realm; it explores the changing family dynamics and the interference of technology in their bond with each other.
In an effort to convince today's children that there is a world outside of their cellphones, Fatherhood director Ben Gregor and Paddington screenwriter Simon Farnaby have moved the action to the present day from Enid Blyton's 1943 book series. The themes are the same as the original source material, but just with a contemporary touch to fit in the 2026 environment.
Just the theme and the objective of the movie seem so intriguing, but the story is even more exciting and fairy-tale-like.
What is The Magic Faraway Tree about?
The story follows the Thompson family in the present time. Polly and Tim are a modern-day couple raising their children on the campus of a London tech company. But there is a slight problem, their definition of a happy family seems to be a little different from what it should be. They interact less and remain isolated, glued to their touchscreens.
Tim notices this and speaks to his wife, Polly, about the issue, voicing his concern about their children missing out on life outside of their mobile devices. Soon, something unwarranted happens, which turns out to be a blessing in disguise. The family is forced to live in a rundown country barn without wi-fi after Polly loses her job. However, as Fran goes into the woods, she finds the portal to fantastical worlds that one can only imagine, The Magic Faraway Tree, and the eccentric characters that reside among its branches.
The story has a lot of charm and depth in it, which calls for a formidable ensemble to bring to life.
Who will play whom in the movie?
Claire Foy (The Crown, Breathe) plays Polly, and Andrew Garfield, who last featured in After the Hunt in 2025, plays Tim in the movie. Their children are played by child-actors Delilah Bennett-Cardy (as Beth), Billie Gadsdon (as Fran), and Phoenix Laroche (as Joe). Furthermore, Horrible Histories star Simon Farnaby portrays a village farmer, while Claire Keelan from Paddington 2 plays his wife. The cast also has the comedy icon Jennifer Saunders as the crazy and vicious grandmother.
