'The Lord of the Rings' Is Recasting Its Most Iconic Hero for 'The Hunt for Gollum'

Peter Jackson truly gave a trilogy for the ages with his epic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings book series. But the world of The lord of the Rings did not end with the original three movies. Its universe was then expanded with tales like The Hobbit Trilogy (2012-2014), also directed by Peter Jackson, and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024). Now, borrowing from the magic of the same world, there is a brand new Lord of the Rings story in the works.

According to a recent update, the new film will witness some new castings, particularly for one of the most iconic heroes of the franchise.

According to Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies, the part of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be recast in the upcoming film. Serkis, who is also directing the upcoming film apart from acting in it, discussed the casting for the much-awaited film in a recent interview with ScreenRant.

“I don't know what's out there at the moment, but I know there's a lot of speculation, but let's just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone,” Serkis said in the interview.

Aragorn's recasting is such a big deal due to the fact that Viggo Mortensen immortalized himself as the character. It would be extremely difficult for the film's producers to find someone else to fill his shoes.

Finding a new face for such an iconic character would also be challenging because franchises like The Lord of the Rings have fervent and devoted fan groups. Mortensen's portrayal of Aragorn was, for the most part, widely lauded, so whoever takes on the role will certainly have a Mortensen-sized chip on his shoulder.

While speculations about the new actor for Aragorn have been rampant ever since the announcement of the movie, another Lord of the Rings star might have accidentally revealed who it is going to be.

Has Viggo Mortensen’s replacement been disclosed?

Since Andy Serkis did not reveal much about the new casting of Aragorn, people have diverted their attention to another source that happens to be a big Lord of the Rings star. Elijah Wood, who played Frodo in the original films, might have unknowingly disclosed the new choice for Aragorn in a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with host Josh Horowitz.

There have been rumors about who would replace Viggo Mortensen in the film. Leo Woodall, who made an impact with his appearances in One Day, Bridget Jones, and Vladimir, is rumored to be playing Aragorn in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. To confirm these speculations, the host of the podcast asked Wood about Woodall’s involvement in the movie.

“Right, that is true. Those are tough boots, I can’t imagine… But that’s gonna be great,” Wood responded.

Although he does not explicitly state that Woodall is portraying Aragorn, he might have been alluding to the fact that the part is being recast. But his comments make it highly likely that the British actor will appear in the movie. Considering this, the mystery around Aragorn's recasting still continues, and only time will tell who will play the iconic role as more details for The Hunt for Gollum come to light.
