Jesse Eisenberg says a Razzie for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice cost him studio movie roles. The remarks came during a talk tied to The Debut, his latest film as director, starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. The Razzies are meant to be a tongue-in-cheek gag, yet this one carried real consequences for a working actor. What follows is a candid look at how one trophy nobody wanted changed a career.
While most winners shrug off a Razzie by morning, this one came with a casting memo attached.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Razzie win left Jesse Eisenberg struggling to land studio roles
According to Jesse Eisenberg, the Razzie win for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice left studios uninterested in casting him. The award was for worst supporting actor, given for his turn as Lex Luthor in the 2016 film. He explained the fallout during a screen talk at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday, as Variety reported, where he spoke openly about how the trophy changed the kind of offers he was getting.
“The industry did not want me to be in a superhero movie,” said Eisenberg.
He added, “and if you’re smart and self-aware, you learn that quickly.”

According to Variety, fear drove his pivot behind the camera, since acting offers no plateau, only a climb or a slide into irrelevance. Eisenberg started writing movies so he could direct them and keep his career afloat, after spotting the trajectory early. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder, opened globally with $424.1 million and still collected four Razzies, including worst screenplay and worst screen combo for Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.
Superhero roles were not the only parts Eisenberg left behind, as a certain tech founder received the same goodbye.
Why Jesse Eisenberg skipped Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Reckoning
At the San Sebastian Film Festival, Jesse Eisenberg said The Social Reckoning simply did not feel like something he wanted to act in again, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. He played Mark Zuckerberg in the 2010 film The Social Network, a role that earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Writer and director Aaron Sorkin reportedly spent three days on the sales pitch, and the answer still was no.

Eisenberg praised the first film and predicted Jeremy Strong would be great as the new Zuckerberg. He also voiced discomfort with the public linking his face and name to the tech founder, and felt it was time to head in new creative directions. The film, in theaters since October 9, follows Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, and Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White. Between a Razzie that closed studio doors and a Zuckerberg role he chose to close himself, Eisenberg has spent the last decade learning exactly which parts he wants to leave behind.
