The History of Concrete is John Wilson’s feature directorial debut. It follows Wilson as he attends a workshop on how to write Hallmark TV movies and goes on to use the same formula to write and make a film about the history of concrete. This joke soon turns into an intriguing and lengthy exploration of modern infrastructure, urban life, and the mundane textures of American life.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2026, and received much praise from critics. Later, it was acquired by Magnolia Pictures in the U.S. and released on September 18, 2026, for a limited theatrical run. As of now, the film is in theaters, but there is no update on whether and when it could make it to streaming platforms.
