On February 21, 2026, CNN and Variety town hall featured where Timothée Chalamet alongside Matthew McConaughey. The main topic of discussion at the event was cinema's future, specifically the difficulties movie theaters come across in a time when streaming services predominate.

During the conversation, Chalamet stated that he prefers to focus only on films and went on to give an explanation for his choice, talking about the difficulty of maintaining people's interest in movies and the theater experience. He made reference to other performance disciplines throughout this process, stating that he steers clear of art forms like ballet or opera, where it can feel like a lot of work just to generate an interest.

“Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore,” said Chalamet, expressing his feelings about the art form. The remark was made amid a more general discussion on the future of movie theaters and the difficulty of keeping viewers' interest in a changing entertainment environment.

Chalamet's comments on the art forms have met with significant backlash since then. Reactions from artists, audiences, and cultural organizations who saw the comments as disparaging the classical performing arts were recorded in the reports. Chalamet and his representatives have not responded to the controversy in public as of March 7, 2026.

The response from The Metropolitan Opera and others

In response to Timothée Chalamet’s comments, The Metropolitan Opera has posted a video of their stage  with the caption: "This one's for you, Timothée."

The video entails the efforts and the exhausting process that goes into the production of a ballet performance. The message became one of the most prominent institutional reactions related to the topic after being extensively shared online.

Colombian British artist Fernando Montaño, a dancer who has performed with the Royal Ballet, also made public remarks about the circumstances. Montaño simply urged that people with significant influence over the masses should use their words more carefully. He advised them to consider how their remarks would be interpreted by various artistic communities.
