The Devil Wears Prada is a cult classic and for good reason. And director David Frankel has called part 2 surreal to revisit the story with a sequel nearly two decades later. Nearly two decades after its release, its iconic moments, like the cerulean speech, cameo appearances by supermodels such as Gisele Bündchen, and Anne Hathaway’s character, keep making the rounds on social media, pulling in both longtime fans and a whole new generation.

The film remains relevant even today, which makes its sequel's arrival natural, though the director still finds the moment unbelievable.

David Frankel, who directed the 2006 hit The Devil Wears Prada, was back at the helm for its sequel. And both the director and the cast have been busy digging up nostalgic memories, promoting the new chapter, and drumming up excitement among its new fandom ahead of the film’s theatrical release. Now, at the sequel’s world premiere, Frankel opened up about how unbelievable it was to revisit the story nearly two decades later.

"It’s surreal to be here tonight because for 18 years we never imagined a sequel would be possible."

It feels just as surreal for the fans, too, who had long manifested for a sequel, with little indication it would ever materialize. Over the years, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt have occasionally reunited for gags at awards shows. However, seeing the trio, especially Streep, return to reprise their roles seemed unlikely.

Now, much to fans’ excitement, all three are officially confirmed to return for the sequel. Stanley Tucci is also expected to return, while Adrian Grenier, who played Andy Sachs’s boyfriend, Nate Cooper, will not be part of the film. At the same time, new actors such as Simone Ashley, Pauline Chalamet, and Ashley Graham are set to join the cast.

With much of the original cast returning to reprise their roles, the sequel appears to feature more drama, tension, and fashion moments in this new era of print journalism.

The Devil Wears Prada sequel is set in the current world

The Devil Wears Prada sequel returns to the same glossy world of runway drama, fashion, and the real brands, almost blurring the line between fiction and reality. Set nearly two decades after the original film, it gives a glimpse of how far the characters have come in their lives and careers. The most intriguing is Andrea (Andy) Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, who has moved well beyond her days as an assistant and is now a features editor.

Meanwhile, fan-favorite Emily Charlton, portrayed by Emily Blunt, appears to be finally loving her job as an advertising executive within a luxury group. Her path is set to cross once again with Miranda Priestly, the formidable editor-in-chief played by Meryl Streep, who is now dealing with a rapidly changing media landscape. And this could reunite the trio in unexpected ways as they fight to keep the magazine relevant. And that will be seen when the movie drops on May 1, 2026.
