'The Devil Wears Prada' Cast Then vs Now: 3 Stars Missing From the Sequel

Published 04/30/2026, 2:15 AM EDT

Much has shifted over the past two decades in fashion, cultural trends, and entertainment, yet The Devil Wears Prada’s impact is just as powerful today as it was when it first came out. If anything, that impact has only grown with the announcement of The Devil Wears Prada 2. And an entire new generation is introduced to the cast of the 2006 classic, who reprise their roles in the sequel.

But while a time jump introduces intriguing changes in the character dynamics in the sequel, much has also changed for the actors. So, here is how much the cast has evolved in the last 2 decades.

The Devil Wears Prada had a star-studded cast, including Anne Hathaway playing the role of Andy Sachs. Since then, she has continued to appear in several successful films and projects. One of her most iconic performances remains her portrayal of Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.

She went on to star in acclaimed films such as Interstellar and Ocean’s 8. Hathaway won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Fantine in the musical Les Misérables. Cut to 2026, she appears as Mother Mary in the film of the same name. And later this year, she will appear as Penelope in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

Meryl Streep: Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada

Meryl Streep has starred in several memorable films, including The Bridges of Madison County, She-Devil, Sophie’s Choice, and Out of Africa, before appearing in The Devil Wears Prada. The success of the film kicked off yet another defining chapter in the Oscar-winning actress’ celebrated career, as she went on to feature in several commercially successful productions.

She appeared as Donna in Mamma Mia!, which grossed over $700 million worldwide, and also starred in It’s Complicated and Into the Woods. The actress was praised for her performance in Doubt, and later she won her third Academy Award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. And, now, she is set to reprise her role as the cold and formidable editor Miranda Priestly.

Emily Blunt: Emily Charlton in The Devil Wears Prada

In the same year that The Devil Wears Prada was released, Emily Blunt also starred in Gideon’s Daughter. Her performance as Natasha earned her a Golden Globe. Since then, she has slowly built a successful and versatile career in both film and television.

She went on to appear in The Young Victoria in 2009 and later in Looper and Edge of Tomorrow, among others. Blunt also reunited with her The Devil Wears Prada co-star Meryl Streep in the film Into the Woods. While she played the Baker’s Wife, Streep portrayed the Witch.

Some of her most notable works include the horror-thriller movie, A Quiet Place, and its sequel, A Quiet Place Part II. More recently, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Katherine Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. And now, she is set to reprise her role as Emily Charlton in the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada.

Nigel Kipling: Stanley Tucci

One of the most beloved characters from The Devil Wears Prada is Nigel Kipling, played by Stanley Tucci. Following the hit movie, he appeared in Burlesque, Easy A, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Margin Call. One of his most memorable roles is as the celebrity host, Caesar Flickerman, in The Hunger Games film series.

He reunited with Meryl Streep in the movie Julie & Julia in 2009. The same year, he played the role of serial killer George Harvey in The Lovely Bones. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the movie. He also shares a connection with Emily Blunt in real life as he is married to her sister, Felicity.

He also won Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series for his documentary series Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy. And the list is long. While these beloved cast members are set to reprise their roles in The Devil Wears Prada 2, unfortunately, some of the actors could not return to reprise their roles.

3 The Devil Wears Prada actors who will not reprise their role

One of the most important characters from The Devil Wears Prada is Andy’s boyfriend, Nate, played by Adrian Grenier. While the reason is unknown, the Trash Fire actor will not be reprising his role in the movie. Grenier, who appeared in the Netflix series Clickbait, has also addressed his absence from the sequel.

"I wasn’t asked to be part of a certain sequel. But I’m good. Really. It’s all good energy,” he told the Starbucks barista.

Another disappointing absence will be supermodel Gisele Bündchen. She played the role of Serena, who is one of Emily Charlton's most fashionable colleagues in the movie. The supermodel’s cameo was one of the special moments in the film, and perhaps this is why director David Frankel wanted her back in the sequel. However, she is the only cast member who had to refuse, as she was pregnant with her first child with Joaquim Valente, as Frankel revealed.

"When we were shooting last summer, she was having a baby, and out of town, it was hard to schedule it," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Apart from her absence, another notable actor missing from the sequel is Simon Baker, who played the role of Christian Thompson. Rich Sommer, Daniel Sunjata, Rebecca Mader, and Stéphanie Szostak are also not part of the sequel. Regardless, there is immense hype around the upcoming movie, which will be seen when it drops in theaters this May.
