Beneath the serene facade of digital spirituality lies a chilling narrative of control that has finally reached the global stage. The digital age has birthed a new kind of prophet, one whose sermons are streamed and whose disciples are recruited via hashtags. While the internet promises connection, The Cult of NatureBoy exposes how social media can also facilitate the ultimate form of isolation. This documentary series peels back the layers of a modern utopia that quickly spiraled into a global nightmare of manipulation.

The documentary now transitions from American screens to a global audience.

The wait for a worldwide perspective on this digital phenomenon is nearly over for international audiences. While American viewers can begin streaming the series, The Cult of NatureBoy, on Hulu immediately, a broader rollout is scheduled for mid-summer. On July 15, the documentary will expand its reach across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as per Deadline.

The narrative centres on Eligio Bishop, a charismatic figure who utilized social media to assemble a group known as Carbon Nation. Bishop convinced his followers to sever all ties with their families to pursue a communal life under his leadership. This transition from online influence to physical control created a dangerous environment for those involved.

Legal complications arose as former members began sharing harrowing accounts of their time within the organization. These allegations of abuse transformed a fringe spiritual movement into a high-profile criminal investigation.

"When former group members come forward with allegations of abuses, Bishop finds himself at the center of one of the most shocking and complex cult cases in recent U.S. history", ABC News stated.

A landmark commission for Zandland and ABC News

According to Deadline, The Cult of NatureBoy marks the first major streaming commission for Zandland, a production company based in the United Kingdom. Collaborating with ABC News Studios, the filmmakers spent years documenting the evolution of Carbon Nation. The result is a comprehensive look at how modern technology can be weaponized for psychological control.

"What makes it so unsettling is that it didn’t happen in isolation; it unfolded in real time, online, in front of a global audience", Director Ben Zand said. Zand highlighted the unique nature of this investigation, noting that the group's activities were performed in public. He remarked, This transparency makes the eventual fallout even more jarring.
