But now, the legendary actor is once again trying his luck with the genre with Sony's The Comebacker, and here are all the details about the upcoming film.

Sony has set the release date for Tom Hanks' baseball flick The Comebacker for July 30, 2027. As Deadline initially reported, the film reunites the two-time Oscar winner with director Marielle Heller, who also helmed the actor in the Mister Rogers classic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Hanks garnered an Oscar nod in the supporting actor category for his portrayal of Rogers in the 2019 movie.

The cast of The Comebacker has added Colman Domingo, Bad Bunny, and Callum Turner besides Tom Hanks so far. Following his highly publicized halftime performance at the Super Bowl, Bad Bunny has ventured into acting, landing minor roles in F9 and Bullet Train, then supporting parts in Happy Gilmore 2 and Caught Stealing. On the other hand, Domingo has solid credits like Zola, Candyman, Euphoria, Michael, Disclosure Day, and many more to his name.

Callum Turner is coming off three varied 2025 movies, Atropia, Rose of Nevada, and Eternity, with Karim Aïnouz‘s Rosebush Pruning and rom-com One Night Only on the horizon this year. Turner will also work on Alone Together with Adria Arjona, Parker Finn's reimagining of Possession with Margaret Qualley, and the forthcoming series adaptation of William Gibson's Neuromancer for Apple TV.

The Comebacker, which is based on the same-titled short story by David Eggers, stars Tom Hanks as a sports journalist who finds his passion again after an up-and-coming pitcher takes a line drive to the skull and starts acting more and more strangely, including giving wildly motivational press conferences that sweep baseball.

Marielle Heller's most recent film was Nightbitch (2024), starring Amy Adams. Her previous directorial credits include The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, in which Hanks played the late Fred Rogers. Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner, made a comeback to voice Woody in the animated feature Toy Story 5, which is currently ruling the box office.
