A beloved character has turned into a terrifying creature on TikTok. It is The Cat in the Hat, which is a familiar character from Dr. Seuss’s whimsical world of colorful creatures, alongside characters such as the Grinch. While the Cat in the Hat is usually portrayed as fluffy and mischievous in films and on the pages of the books, it has become the focus of one of TikTok’s fastest-growing viral trends. Although the trend began as a fun series of videos featuring life-sized versions of the Dr. Seuss character, it quickly took a darker turn.
The same videos have now become a source of fear among young viewers across social media. Here is how the trend began and how it quickly flipped from fun to fear.

The Cat in the Hat trend began in June when a TikTok user posted a video of Mike Myers from his 2003 film The Cat in the Hat. The video showed Myers as the Cat dancing to a bizarre soundtrack that quickly gained traction. The video amassed 4.4 million views within just a week. And this clip sparked a trend in which users took various scenes from the movie and turned them into creepy videos.
Some posts showed the characters supposedly walking through the streets of the UK and Ireland, which quickly went viral and gained millions of views. The videos even left some young users seemingly convinced that the character was real and wandering the streets.

What contributed to the fear were conspiracy theories surrounding the film and the grainy footage, which made the videos appear more realistic. As the fear began to spread among young users on social media, police forces in Ireland and the UK issued statements clarifying that the images were fake and AI-generated. Perhaps adding to the eerie nature of the trend, the original costume from the movie was also put up for auction through Propstore. With its hollow eyes, the costume looks even more unsettling in photographs.
Apart from the fear, the videos were mostly created for fun, which seemingly backfired as they ended up creating terror on social media. Regardless, many seem to be enjoying the character’s return, and there is also curiosity over whether the 2003 movie is available to watch online.
How to watch The Cat in the Hat?
The 2003 live-action adaptation of The Cat in the Hat is available to rent on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. The film follows two siblings, Conrad and Sally Walden, who are left in the care of their lazy babysitter. Their day takes an unexpected turn when they meet a talking cat wearing a red-and-white striped hat, who teaches them how to have fun.
