'The Boys' Follows the 'Stranger Things' Way, Finale to Release in Theatres

The Boys is set to mirror Stranger Things with a theatrical release plan for its highly anticipated finale. The show is in its fifth and final season this year, and it is finally gearing up to show how the boys bring an end to Homelander. But one of the biggest antagonists is not going down without a fight, which is clearly worth watching on the big screen. Following Netflix’s lead, Amazon Prime will release The Boys finale episode in theaters a day before it arrives on the streaming platform on May 20.
And what is more exciting is that this cinematic experience promises even more surprises.

The finale episode of The Boys Season 5 will be released in 4DX theaters on May 19. And it will be available across several locations, including Regal Cinemas, AMC Theatres, B&B Theatres, Marcus Theatres, Cineplex, Cinema West, Cinépolis, and Regency Theatres, among others. While traditional movie tickets are not required, viewers will need to reserve seats by purchasing a concession voucher.
So, there is clearly a strong interest in experiencing the Emmy-winning series on the big screen. Previously, HBO Max and Warner Bros. brought the final episode of The Pitt Season 2 to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on April 13. Another streaming platform to embrace this theatrical approach was Stranger Things.
The show’s climactic episode, The Rightside Up, which ran for over two hours, was released both in theaters and on its streaming platform. Much like The Boys, the Stranger Things finale was made available via a $20 concession voucher rather than standard movie tickets, and it went on to earn more than $25 million. So, there is a high expectation for The Boys finale release, too.
It seems audiences themselves may have played a key role in turning theatrical releases of TV finales into a growing trend.
Theatrical release of Stranger Things finale episode was a surprise
Stranger Things creators, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, had initially spoken about their interest in a theatrical release for the finale episode of their show in an interview with Variety. They noted that viewers often miss out on the best sound and picture quality when watching at home. And they further pressed on the unique experience of enjoying the show alongside a passionate, excited fandom.
“That would be amazing,” Ross said. “Because the fans could be there with other fans, and experience it as a communal thing — it would be incredible.”

While Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, had earlier brushed off the idea, social media quickly erupted with fans calling for a theatrical premiere. And later, Netflix released the finale episode of Stranger Things in theaters for the first time. Traditionally, the platform has seen films like Frankenstein make rounds in theaters before release on Netflix to qualify for awards contention. However, this new initiative hints at an intriguing shift for moviegoers.
