‘The Body Next Door’: The Chilling True Story Behind the 2024 British Documentary
Secrets rarely bring joy with them; that is why they are meant to die with time. However, some of them lie in wait to be uncovered someday, and it is never a joyous occasion when they wake up from the dead. When brought to light, they generate widespread hysteria and disbelief at what was kept hidden for so long right under everybody’s noses.
The Body Next Door, a British documentary from 2024, tells the true story behind one such secret that shook the whole village of Beddau, a quiet and peaceful neighborhood in South Wales. The secret was well preserved for almost 20 years until one day someone accidentally stumbled upon it.
The documentary takes the truth from the quiet Welsh village to the world to see - a truth that is more bone-chilling in real life than it appears on the screen.

What true events actually inspired The Body Next Door?
In 2015, two friends, Michelle James and Rhian Lee, stumbled upon a corpse in the communal garden of the village. They initially thought that it was a packaged medicinal skeleton, but when they started opening it, they realized that it was, in fact, a real corpse. They immediately informed the cops, and they started investigating the matter.
The body, which had been wrapped in up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) of plastic and carpet, was thought to be weeks or months old in the analysis by a pathologist. They concluded that it belonged to a man in his 40s who had died from blunt-force injuries.
James claimed that the individual who had informed her that the package had a medical skeleton was Leigh Sabine, and that it actually belonged to her. Her claims were confirmed by Lynne Williams, Sabine's caregiver, who cared for her until her death from terminal cancer in 2015.
Now that it is established that Mrs. Sabine had this corpse all along, the main question still remains unanswered: whose corpse was it?
The identity of the corpse revealed
On further investigating the matter, the police discovered that the dead body was that of Leigh Sabine’s ex-husband, John Sabine. An inquest in 2016 found that Sabine had been murdered, most likely by his late wife. Sabine was listed on the leasing agreement and voting registration, but not anywhere else. The couple had moved into the apartment together in 1997.

Although never confirmed, it was implied that she used an ornamental frog to hit his head, fatally injuring him. A call recording with her friend Valerie Chalkley in 1997 reveals that she admitted to killing her husband, but whether she was joking or being serious cannot be determined. Anyhow, the 2024 documentary, which is available for streaming right now, does a great job in bringing this real story through interviews and terrifying first-hand recollections, and lets viewers decide for themselves what the truth is.
