The Dance of the Dragons has already claimed some of the most formidable beasts in Westeros. From Meleys and Arrax to Vermax, the war has steadily transformed the Targaryens' greatest advantage into one of their biggest vulnerabilities. Now, with Season 3 ending in the chaos of Tumbleton, the surviving dragons are more important than ever as both factions prepare for the final stage of the civil war.

But counting the dragons still standing is not as straightforward as simply splitting them into Black and Green camps. Some remain firmly tied to their riders, some have been left riderless, and others have effectively abandoned the faction they once served. With House of the Dragon Season 4 set to bring the story to its conclusion, here is where every surviving dragon and rider stands heading into the final season.

Despite suffering devastating losses throughout the Dance, Rhaenyra's faction still has several powerful dragons at its disposal. From veteran war beasts like Caraxes to younger dragons such as Tyraxes, the Blacks enter Season 4 with a mix of experienced fighters, uncertain dragonseeds and vulnerable young mounts.

Syrax remains the personal dragon of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and one of the most recognizable survivors on the Black side. The yellow dragon has been with Rhaenyra since childhood and remains closely tied to her claim to the Iron Throne. Despite not seeing as much direct combat as some of the Dance's larger dragons, Syrax remains an important symbol of Rhaenyra's power.

However, Syrax is no longer untouched by the war. She was injured during her confrontation with Sheepstealer in Season 3, leaving her battle-readiness somewhat more complicated than it was earlier in the Dance. Still, both dragon and rider survive heading into Season 4. Whether Syrax can recover enough to play a major role in the final battles remains an important question for the Blacks.

The Blood Wyrm remains one of the most dangerous dragons alive and arguably the most experienced combat dragon on the Black side. His distinctive appearance and battle-hardened nature have made him one of the most feared dragons in the Dance. Caraxes and Daemon have fought together throughout the Dance and the pair survive the chaos at Tumbleton.

During the finale, Caraxes is seen pursuing Silverwing after Ulf turns against the Blacks, although the sequence leaves the exact circumstances deliberately open-ended. The encounter further highlights just how unpredictable the dragon war has become as former allies turn against one another. With Daemon still firmly at the center of the war, Caraxes remains one of Team Black's most valuable weapons. Their experience together could prove crucial as Rhaenyra's forces face the increasingly brutal final stage of the Dance.

Moondancer remains bonded to Baela Targaryen and survives the Battle of the Gullet, where she fought alongside the Black forces. Her survival gives the Blacks another active dragon-rider pair as the Dance moves toward its final and most dangerous phase. Baela's continued presence also gives Rhaenyra another experienced young rider she can rely on.

The young dragon is considerably smaller than monsters such as Vhagar, Caraxes and Vermithor, but Baela's skill and courage have made the pair an important part of Rhaenyra's remaining dragon force. Moondancer's agility could also give her an advantage in situations where sheer size and strength are not enough. That combination of speed and a determined rider could make Moondancer more formidable than her size suggests.

Seasmoke is one of the most important dragonseed dragons on Team Black. After previously belonging to Laenor Velaryon, the pale dragon chose Addam of Hull as his new rider. Their bond quickly establishes Addam as one of the most significant new dragonriders to emerge during the Dance. Addam's loyalty to Rhaenyra has also made him one of the more dependable dragonseeds, particularly as the loyalties of Hugh Hammer and Ulf White become increasingly complicated.

His commitment gives the Blacks a valuable ally at a time when trust among the dragonseeds is beginning to fracture. For now, Seasmoke and Addam remain among the Black faction's active dragon-rider pairs. Their continued loyalty could become increasingly important as Rhaenyra's forces prepare for the final battles of the war.

The Bronze Fury is one of the biggest dragons still associated with the Blacks and was claimed by the blacksmith-turned-dragonrider Hugh Hammer.However, Tumbleton has fundamentally changed Hugh's position. After discovering the fate of his wife, Kat, Hugh is left devastated while the battle descends into chaos.

Unlike Ulf, he does not openly betray Rhaenyra during the finale, but his emotional state and relationship with the Black cause are clearly deteriorating.That makes Vermithor one of the biggest question marks heading into Season 4. The dragon survives the finale, but whether Hugh remains a Black rider is another matter entirely.

Tyraxes remains bonded to Rhaenyra's youngest son, Joffrey Velaryon. Their bond also represents the next generation of the Targaryen family growing up in the shadow of the Dance. The dragon is still too young and small to be considered a major battlefield weapon, meaning Tyraxes is unlikely to make the same kind of impact as Caraxes or Vermithor.

Nevertheless, the young dragon remains an important part of the surviving Targaryen bloodline and could become more significant as the final season unfolds. For now, Tyraxes is more valuable as a symbol of the family's future than as a weapon of war.

Sheepstealer is perhaps the strangest case on the Black side. The wild dragon was successfully claimed by Rhaena Targaryen in Season 3, marking a major departure from Fire & Blood, where the dragon's rider is Nettles. Rhaena subsequently took Sheepstealer into the Battle of the Gullet, where the inexperienced pair contributed to the chaos that resulted in Jacaerys and Vermax's deaths.

Later in the season, Sheepstealer was badly injured during a confrontation involving Syrax, Caraxes and Seasmoke. Rhaenyra ordered Daemon to kill the dragon, but Sheepstealer escaped into the wilderness instead. Rhaena was subsequently separated from her mount. So while Sheepstealer is alive, the dragon cannot currently be counted as an active Black war asset. Its fate and whether Rhaena will reunite with it, remains one of Season 4's biggest dragon mysteries.

Stormcloud is another surviving young dragon associated with the Blacks. The dragon is bonded to Aegon the Younger but is far too small to play a meaningful role in the Dance's major battles. Unlike the older dragons, Stormcloud's importance lies largely in what he could represent for the future of House Targaryen.

Stormcloud's survival is nevertheless significant because the younger generation of Targaryens will ultimately inherit whatever remains of the dynasty after the war. His continued existence offers a small glimpse of hope for the Targaryen line beyond the devastation of the Dance.

The Greens may have lost several key dragons and riders, but their remaining forces still include some of the most formidable creatures in Westeros. With Vhagar and Sunfyre among their ranks, Team Green retains enough firepower to remain a serious threat as the Dance enters its final stage.

If the Blacks have Caraxes, the Greens still have Vhagar. The oldest, largest and most formidable living dragon remains bonded to Prince Aemond Targaryen. Vhagar has already killed multiple Black dragons and riders during the Dance and remains the Greens' ultimate weapon. Her sheer size and decades of battle experience make her a terrifying presence whenever she takes to the skies.

Aemond's increasingly volatile ambitions make the pair even more dangerous heading into Season 4. As long as Vhagar remains alive and under Aemond's control, Team Green still possesses an enormous military advantage. Few dragons on either side can realistically match the destructive power that Vhagar brings to the battlefield.

The Golden is back. Sunfyre's survival is especially significant because the dragon was once thought to be lost after the devastating events at Rook's Rest. After appearing to have been fatally wounded at Rook's Rest, Sunfyre ultimately survived and reunited with Aegon II. The dragon's return is one of the most important developments heading into Season 4 because it means Rhaenyra's greatest rival still has a dragon of his own.

Their reunion gives Aegon a renewed source of power as he attempts to reclaim his position in the increasingly chaotic war. Aegon and Sunfyre are both badly battered, but they remain alive and their survival sends Rhaenyra into an increasingly ruthless phase of the war. The damaged pair may no longer be the force they once were, but they remain dangerous players in the final struggle for the throne.

Tessarion, the Blue Queen, remains associated with Daeron Targaryen, but the Season 3 finale deliberately leaves their immediate status uncertain. Daeron is caught in the chaos surrounding Tumbleton, with the episode cutting away before his fate is definitively confirmed.

That makes this pair one of the biggest unresolved pieces heading into Season 4. Their uncertain fate could have major consequences for the balance of power between the two factions. For now, Tessarion and Daeron should be treated as possible survivors rather than confirmed casualties. Season 4 will likely provide the answers to whether the young prince and his dragon made it through the bloodshed at Tumbleton.

The Book-To-Screen Differences That Defined the ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Finale

Silverwing's allegiance has effectively collapsed. The silver dragon was originally claimed by Ulf White as one of Rhaenyra's dragonseeds. But during the Battle of Tumbleton, Ulf turns his dragon against the Black forces before eventually burning forces on both sides. What began as another valuable addition to Rhaenyra's dragon army quickly becomes one of the Dance's most dramatic betrayals.

By the end of the battle, Ulf and Silverwing have effectively broken away from both factions. Caraxes is seen pursuing Silverwing as the dragon flees Tumbleton, leaving their ultimate destination unknown. That makes Silverwing a survivor but not really a Green dragon either. She is better described as an independent dragon whose rider has betrayed both sides. Her uncertain allegiance makes Silverwing particularly difficult to classify heading into Season 4. With the war becoming increasingly chaotic, the dragon could potentially become a wild card rather than a weapon controlled by either faction.

Dreamfyre technically remains alive, but her rider is gone. The ancient dragon is therefore one of the few surviving members of the Greens' original dragon force without an active Targaryen rider. Helaena Targaryen's death in the Season 3 finale leaves Dreamfyre without a rider. The dragon therefore cannot be counted as an active Green weapon heading into Season 4. Even so, Dreamfyre remains a formidable creature whose presence could become important as the conflict reaches its final stages.

Her riderless status could become significant as the Dance reaches its most chaotic stage, particularly with the future of the Dragonpit hanging over the final season. With tensions surrounding the dragons and their captivity reaching a breaking point, Dreamfyre's fate could ultimately become intertwined with the wider destruction caused by the war.

The biggest takeaway from the Season 3 finale is that the distinction between "Black dragon" and "Green dragon" is becoming increasingly meaningless. Ulf and Silverwing have already demonstrated how quickly a dragonseed can change the balance of power. Hugh and Vermithor are emotionally shattered. Sheepstealer is wounded and separated from Rhaena. Dreamfyre is riderless. Daeron and Tessarion remain uncertain. With so many dragons caught between loyalty, survival and independence, the traditional battle lines are beginning to blur.

And that is before the final season brings the Dance's most devastating events. The surviving dragons may still belong to different factions on paper, but the war has made loyalty increasingly difficult to predict. Season 4 could therefore see alliances shift again as the remaining riders are forced to make choices that could determine the fate of the Targaryen dynasty.

By the time House of the Dragon heads into its fourth and final season, the once-mighty Targaryen dragon army has been dramatically reduced. The Blacks still have major forces in Syrax, Caraxes, Moondancer, Seasmoke and Vermithor, alongside the younger Tyraxes and Stormcloud and the uncertain Sheepstealer. The Greens retain the devastating Vhagar and the newly returned Sunfyre, while Tessarion's fate remains unclear. Silverwing has effectively broken away from both factions, and Dreamfyre has been left without Helaena.

But surviving Season 3 is hardly a guarantee of survival through Season 4. With the Dance approaching its bloodiest chapters, the remaining dragons are heading toward battles that could reshape the future of House Targaryen forever. The final season will not simply decide who wins the throne, it will determine which dragons, if any, are left when the war finally ends.
