The 2026 Emmys may have crowned Widow’s Bay, The Diplomat, and The Gilded Age among the night’s biggest winners, but shows like Task, Beef and The Bear were left with some painfully empty-handed moments. Even the winning shows had their own snubs, with The Pitt missing out in a major supporting actress category and Hacks losing the comedy series crown. If you missed these series the first time around, the morning after the Emmys is a pretty good excuse to catch up.

Award season has a funny way of turning television into a scoreboard, even when the shows themselves are much messier and more interesting than a list of winners can suggest.

The Pitt was hardly ignored at the 2026 Emmys. In fact, it repeated as Outstanding Drama Series, while Noah Wyle won Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the second consecutive year. That makes The Pitt, which premiered in 2025, an essential watch even beyond its Emmy haul. The series is streaming on HBO Max, with availability also listed through the HBO Max Amazon Channel and related Max bundles. 

Yet the medical drama still produced one of the evening’s more baffling misses when Allison Janney won Supporting Actress over four of its performers: Katherine LaNasa, Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif and Sepideh Moafi. The Pitt snub also points to a bigger truth about this year’s acting races: a crowded field can make it harder for even the strongest performances to break through. When four actresses from the same series occupy one category, the vote can fracture, leaving a performance that might have won in another year without the statue.

That was particularly clear when another HBO drama arrived at the Emmys with a formidable contender of its own, only to watch the trophy go to Wyle.

Mark Ruffalo entered the night as one of the strongest arguments for an acting upset. His performance as Tom in HBO Max’s Task had to compete against Noah Wyle, who ultimately won for The Pitt, while the series still managed to claim a supporting actor Emmy for Tom Pelphrey. The series is available to stream on HBO Max and through the HBO Max Amazon Channel, with other on-demand options also available. 

Premiering in 2025, Task works because Ruffalo does not play the crime-drama lead as an untouchable television hero. Tom is worn down, ordinary and visibly carrying personal trauma, which makes the criminal world around him feel more unsettling rather than more glamorous. Ruffalo may not have taken home the trophy, but the performance is precisely the kind that becomes more revealing once the awards-season noise fades.

Pluribus was arguably the strangest drama in the Emmy race, which may also explain why its loss to The Pitt was so striking. Vince Gilligan won for writing and Rhea Seehorn won Lead Actress in a Drama Series, yet the Apple TV series missed the biggest drama prize despite earning the kind of critical conversation usually associated with an awards-season favorite. The series is available to stream on Apple TV, making it an easy choice for viewers who want something more cerebral after the Emmys.

Hacks is available on HBO Max and through the HBO Max Amazon Channel, with additional purchase options available. For a show that spent five seasons turning comedy into an increasingly sharp examination of age, ambition, fame and creative survival, Hacks deserved a grander farewell.

Jean Smart did win Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth consecutive time, but the series itself lost Outstanding Comedy Series to Widow’s Bay, which dominated the category throughout the night, with Matthew Rhys sweeping the trophies.

Beef had already experienced the strange privilege of being an awards-season phenomenon. Its first season, which premiered in 2023, won five of its nine Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Season 2 had Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan in the acting race, but the same momentum did not carry over this time. Both seasons are available to stream on Netflix.

There was a time when The Bear seemed almost impossible to beat at the Emmys. In 2023, the series swept every category in which it was nominated, turning Carmy, Sydney, Richie and the rest of the kitchen into awards-season fixtures. By 2026, the series was nominated in only three Primetime Emmy categories and lost all three, making its final-season reception one of the evening’s biggest disappointments. The series is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu, with availability varying by market.

The 2026 Emmys may have settled the official winners, but the most interesting part of awards season is often the argument that starts after the envelopes are opened. These six shows prove that an Emmy count is not always a reliable measure of what is worth watching.
