Barbie turned into one of the defining cinema events of 2023, turning Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling into the faces of a billion-dollar sensation. Greta Gerwig's vision earned eight Oscar nominations and painted cinemas pink across the globe. Three years later, excitement for a follow-up remains sky-high, yet very little has moved forward behind closed doors.
While audiences have spent years imagining what a follow-up could look like, the studio behind it has been stuck fighting the clock instead.

Warner Bros. is racing against time to finalize a sequel before the rights to Barbie quietly return to Mattel this December. Talks have dragged on for months, touching on profit sharing and upfront pay for the original cast and crew. Both sides remain without a signed agreement despite repeated rounds of offers.
"We have a rights deal with Mattel in place and have made a series of big offers to try and finalize deals to make the next Barbie film," said the studio co-chairs, Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca, addressing the delay directly, as per The New York Times.
They then added, "Unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement thus far," making clear just how unresolved things remain.

According to The New York Times, David Zaslav reportedly rejected earlier offers as too generous, despite his own executives having agreed to the terms. Talent representatives, meanwhile, are said to have turned down the studio's latest proposal from May without sending a counteroffer. Adding pressure, the paused merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount leaves the studio needing Barbie as a steady pillar of its franchise plans.
As executives argue over numbers on paper, the original film's numbers on screen tell a very different story.
How Barbie performed at the box office
Barbie closed its run with a worldwide total near $1.447 billion, built on $636.2 million domestically and $810.9 million internationally. Its opening weekend alone brought in $162 million against a production budget of roughly $128 to $145 million. The film became the highest-grossing release of 2023 and the highest-grossing title in Warner Bros. history. It also stands as the biggest solo directorial achievement by a woman in box office history.

Barbie currently lives primarily on Max, alongside rental and purchase options on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. Physical copies remain widely available for those who prefer a permanent copy at home. In select regions outside the United States, the film has also appeared on other platforms at different points. Until Warner Bros. and Mattel settle their standoff, the original film remains the only chapter of this pink universe available to revisit.
