Unlike the fast-paced entertainment standard of modern blockbusters, Zack Snyder has consistently approached superhero cinema through the lens of modern mythology. Viewing iconic figures like Batman and Superman as pure archetypes akin to Greek gods or biblical figures, the director infuses his films with a somber, epic, and visually grand style - frequently likened to a Wagnerian opera - to probe heavy, complex questions of morality, power, and sacrifice. 

This approach, however, is in stark contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which while touching upon some of the similar themes choses to refrain from heavy and darker undertones, keeping things light and colorful at the end of the day. The vast difference in approach has frequently been pointed out but people never actually knew why exactly that was the case.

That is until now. Zack Snyder has recently addressed his reservations about the MCU approach to superhero films giving an insight into why he rejects the Marvel blueprint.

Zack Snyder bluntly explained his aversion to the Marvel model, likening it to an amusement park ride with a predictable cadence of highs and lows intended to amuse rather than truly move viewers. In remarks quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, he clarified that he was not interested in reproducing that structure and that he would like to simply discuss the mythology of these characters.

“I’d rather just kind of talk about the mythology of them. And maybe that’s not as fun,” he said about the Marvel movies.

Snyder admitted in the interview with The Hollywood Reporter that there was a clear trade-off associated with his choice for mythological exploration over spectacle. He acknowledged that his method might not be as enjoyable as the thrilling theme park ride Marvel had mastered. That kind of self-awareness has become a recurrent element in Snyder's discussions about his DC legacy, portraying his movies as a conscious break from the formula of popularity rather than just a variation on the same genre.

Snyder's thoughts extended beyond Marvel's business strategy to the current state of the DC universe.

The Man of Steel director also discussed his conflicted feelings about the present status of the DC Universe in the same chat, admitting that he has not yet seen James Gunn's Superman but expressing his sincere support for Gunn and his desire that the new DC Studios era is successful.

“I just haven’t gotten around to it yet,” he said about not seeing the film.

At this stage of his career, Snyder seems to be willing to discuss his creative decisions honestly without portraying them as a rivalry with what comes after him. That combination of openness and goodwill nails this. Hearing him explain the true rationale behind those decisions provides helpful perspective for fans who are still arguing his legacy, as his DC tenure continues to be one of the most divisive periods in contemporary superhero filmmaking.
