Ethan Hawke did not hesitate to call out actors who are reluctant to film in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The city has served as the location for several television shows and is the heart of Hawke’s series The Lowdown, which was filmed there. Hawke has spoken enthusiastically about his experience filming in Tulsa, praising the city and the local community for welcoming him.

When Hawke was told that some people, particularly actors, might be reluctant to film in the city, he quickly defended Tulsa and expressed his appreciation for it.

During Ethan Hawke’s recent GQ interview for One More Question, Zach Baron asked whether actors of Hawke’s age and stature might be reluctant to sacrifice comfort and take on the challenges of filming in Tulsa. The city’s extreme weather can make production difficult. But Hawke was quick to push back against that notion.

“Yeah, well, those people don't deserve to shoot a movie in Tulsa, Oklahoma, okay? And that's the truth. That is the attitude of a lost soul. Tulsa is amazing,” he said.

He further spoke about how the show’s creator, Sterlin Harjo, introduced him to the local community, artists, and musicians. It seems Hawke is less interested in seeking comfort and more focused on his career and the people he works with. During the interview, he shared a similar view on his fame, as he claimed that he can collaborate with talented people while still being able to walk into a grocery store without attracting a huge crowd. Now, although Hawke is not from Tulsa, his experiences have clearly left him with a deep appreciation for the city and its people.

This connection perhaps also brings more depth to his character and makes the story of The Lowdown even more compelling.

What is the show The Lowdown about?

Created by Sterlin Harjo, the crime series The Lowdown is loosely inspired by historian Lee Roy Chapman. The series follows Lee Raybon, played by Ethan Hawke, who is a bookstore owner in Tulsa. He also works as an investigative journalist, finding out the truth about local corruption and exposing secrets.

However, when Raybon stumbles upon a major revelation, he must also protect his family and friends from danger. After the first season premiered in 2025, the show has returned for a second season, bringing more secrets, investigations, and trouble for Raybon. Season 2 premiered on October 14, 2026.
