Something is rotten in the state of cinema, and award-winning thespians are quick to address the issue. In a new age dominated by OTTs and incessant homebound binge-watching, the death of cinema halls looks inevitable. So, Stellan Skarsgård has taken matters into his own hands.

At the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, the veteran actor not only won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Sentimental Value, but also shared a powerful thought about the timeless charm of cinemas.

Skarsgård's speech holds immense significance amid the current streaming boom.

Stellan Skarsgård advocated for movie theaters at the Golden Globes 2026

Though streaming services have taken the lead in viewers' preferences and theatrical releases often find themselves in the backseat, Stellan Skarsgård chose to point out through his acceptance speech the very reason why cinema should be seen in cinemas.

"Hopefully, you will see it in a cinema, because they are an extinct species now. In a cinema, where the lights go down, and eventually you share the pulse with other people, that is magic. Cinema should be seen in cinemas," Skarsgård said while urging people to watch movies at theaters.

While taking the trophy, Skarsgård also expressed gratitude to his spouse and family, but he dedicated the most ardent part of his speech to the question of the theatrical experience. The actor pointed out the basics of enjoying a movie in the theaters, how being in a dark room with the audience and connecting the same way is magic, something home streaming simply cannot provide.

"But most of all, I am very happy for this, because it is a small Norwegian film with no money for advertising or anything that gets to see the world in this way," Skarsgård reflected on what it meant to win a Globe for an independent movie like Sentimental Value, bereft of aggressive marketing.

Sentimental Value (2025) — Plot, cast, & where to watch

Sentimental Value is a 2025 drama that traces two sisters, Nora and Agnes, who reconnect with their estranged father Gustav Borg, a director whose career is on the decline. He is now trying to repair their relationship while carrying a comeback film.

The plot thickens when Nora, who is offered the main character role in the movie, turns it down, and an American actress, Rachel Kemp, comes into the picture, making the family relationship even more complicated. While Kemp's stardom invites Netflix's interest in financing the film, Gustav Borg refuses to do so, and Kemp drops out.

With a mature script, the film gradually cooks up uneasy tension between artistic liberty and interpersonal relationships. Among the list of actors are Stellan Skarsgård (Gustav Borg), Renate Reinsve (Nora), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Agnes), and Elle Fanning (Rachel Kemp).

The movie received a 19-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 and opened in US theaters on November 7, 2025. While the theatrical window has long passed, those intrigued can stream it on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube Movies & TV for now.
