Annie Potts has slammed Jim Parsons’ return as the adult Sheldon in the Young Sheldon finale. The two-part farewell aired in May 2024 and marked the first time Parsons appeared on screen as the character since The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019. Mayim Bialik stepped in as Amy Farrah Fowler, and the reunion looked like a gift for fans. Apparently, Sheldon’s on-screen grandmother did not feel the same way.

As fans cheered the adult Sheldon’s big comeback, one member of the Cooper family sat through it with a stomachache and plenty to say.

Why the adult Sheldon scene in the Young Sheldon finale upset Annie Potts

Annie Potts says Jim Parsons’ adult Sheldon in the Young Sheldon finale broke her heart, particularly when he hesitated to attend his son Leonard’s hockey game despite having two children with Amy. Speaking about Sheldon’s lack of growth, Potts shared her disappointment in Jessica Radloff’s book, Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy.

“That broke my heart. It was like, ‘Really? Still no responsibility?’ It was just selfishness,” Potts said.

She then added, “It’s just not how I wish to see Sheldon off into the world.”

In Jessica Radloff’s book, Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy, Potts also said the series could have ended with Iain Armitage’s young Sheldon, without the “dreaded” scene featuring Parsons and Mayim Bialik. She admitted the moment gave her a stomachache, comparing the pair to uninvited guests crashing a party. However, her frustration was directed at the way the adult Sheldon was portrayed, rather than at Parsons himself. Although Sheldon eventually attends Leonard’s hockey game after remembering how consistently his own parents supported him, Potts felt that moment of growth came too late.

While Potts wanted Sheldon to grow up on screen, the man playing him was battling growing pains of his own.

Jim Parsons admits he was miserable at the height of The Big Bang Theory

Jim Parsons has revealed that he was unhappy at the peak of The Big Bang Theory, despite the sitcom turning him into a global star. Speaking on the All Out with Jon Dean podcast, Parsons said he now realizes that, at some of the best moments of his life, he was miserable. The show ran for 12 seasons and dominated ratings, which makes the admission land a lot harder for fans.

He explained that he felt pulled in many directions, believing every good thing in his life depended on hard work and constant pressure to perform. Parsons admitted he was not emotionally ready for the pressure of the show’s success, and he would not choose to relive that stretch of his life. Since the show ended, he views playing Sheldon more healthily. Parsons left the stress behind with the show, yet Annie Potts cannot shake the Sheldon who stayed exactly the same.
