James Gunn has once again used Threads to cut through DCU casting speculation, this time addressing reports that Jensen Ackles has joined the franchise. The filmmaker has become unusually accessible online, making his social media replies one of the quickest ways for fans to separate real DC news from internet noise. That habit has made Gunn something of a one-man rumor-control desk for the new DCU.
If there is one thing that has become clear about following Gunn, it is that fans do not need a Hollywood insider hotline to get his attention. Tag him, ask him directly, and there is always a chance he will answer, whether the question concerns casting, scripts, continuity or one particularly persistent fan theory.
That makes his latest clarification especially useful, because this time the rumor had a familiar fandom breadcrumb behind it: an Instagram follow. And Gunn was ready with the sort of deadpan answer that has become part of his online persona.
James Gunn says Jensen Ackles has not been cast in the DCU
A fan page claimed that Supernatural star Jensen Ackles had reportedly been cast somewhere in the DCU, pointing to Ackles recently following James Gunn on Instagram as possible evidence. The theory had some extra fuel because Ackles is already closely associated with Batman after voicing the character in animation and has openly expressed interest in playing the Caped Crusader in live action.
Gunn, however, shut the speculation down on Threads.
“Thanks for letting me know. I’m going to follow him back. I met him once 20 years ago when he was dating a friend of mine. Nice guy. We haven’t cast him as anything,” he wrote.

He has previously described most casting rumors as false and said DC does not cast major roles without scripts. There is also a neat bit of recent history here. This is the second casting rumor Gunn has knocked down on Threads in roughly a week, after responding “No” to speculation that Matthew Lillard could be playing the Flash in Man of Tomorrow.
But while Gunn is closing one casting rabbit hole, another DCU clarification offers a useful glimpse into how the universe has been taking shape.
Clayface was always part of the DCU
James Gunn also answered a question about Clayface, the horror-driven DC Studios movie produced by Matt Reeves. A fan asked whether the project had ever been intended to exist inside Reeves’ separate The Batman universe, a logical question given Reeves’ involvement and the long history of Mike Flanagan developing his version of the character. Gunn answered plainly: “No. From the first draft it was in the DCU.”

That distinction matters because Clayface is now positioned as one of the DCU’s more unusual early entries. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Tom Rhys Harries starring as Matt Hagen, and the official film site confirms Gunn, Peter Safran and Reeves among the producers. The film opens October 23, 2026.
Flanagan has recently said that the finished film is “very much not mine,” explaining that his involvement ended after delivering his script. Meanwhile, early tracking places Clayface at a projected $23 million to $33 million domestic opening, giving Gunn and DC another intriguing test as the studio pushes beyond conventional superhero territory.
For now, Jensen Ackles remains outside the DCU, while Clayface is firmly inside it. Gunn’s latest Threads replies have once again shown why, in the DCU rumor cycle, sometimes the fastest route to the answer is simply asking Gunn himself.
