Cinema has about 138 years of history, with Louis Le Prince filming the first surviving film, Roundhay Garden Scene, back in 1888. Since then, countless movies have been made, and some of the old classics have even stood the test of time, but sadly not the standards of modern imagery. To fix this and bring the classics up to speed with the latest digital parameters, Studiocanal has taken an important step.

Studiocanal is pushing to bring back classics like Terminator 2 and Manhunter in 4K, powered by a $29 million investment. 

With a collection of over 18,000 titles that it claims is the largest outside of the United States, Studiocanal has introduced Studiocanal Classics, a new global catalog label. As per the claim, there is a century's worth of film history in the library. Furthermore, over the past seven years, Studiocanal has invested over €25 million ($29 million) in 4K restorations of nearly 1,000 vintage feature films.

The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Benelux, Poland, Australia, and New Zealand are all part of Studiocanal's distribution network. Other partners handle South Africa and Scandinavia. As part of what it refers to as a 360-degree approach that includes creation, production, distribution, and catalog management, the firm releases roughly 112 theatrical films and 170 home entertainment titles annually.

Additionally, Studiocanal licenses parts of its catalog outside of traditional distribution, such as collaborations linking Terminator 2 to Activision's Call of Duty and Epic Games' Fortnite, cine-concert productions centered around The King and the Mockingbird and Terminator 2, and clip-licensing agreements with companies like Chanel and Cartier. The library is frequently featured at festivals like Il Cinema Ritrovato and Cannes Classics.

But what the studio does best is give new life to classics in theaters, which it will be doing this year in epic fashion with an iconic slate.

The launch includes a number of significant big-screen comebacks for moviegoers. For its 35th anniversary, James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day will reopen in theaters on August 27, with 2D, 3D, 4DX, and D-BOX versions available. A recently restored version of Michael Mann's Manhunter, which the director is in charge of, is also making a comeback. On September 25, 40 years after the thriller's initial release, Manhunter: The Final Cut will hit UK theaters.

A new 4K restoration of Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth will commemorate its 20th anniversary later this autumn, while a Jacques Tati retrospective will return several of the French director's films to theaters. The Venice Film Festival will also feature the debut of a brand-new 4K restoration of Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be. There is more planned by Studiocanal, and they all will be revealed in due time.
