The X-Men are finally coming home, but first, they have to survive the end of time itself. After becoming one of Marvel's biggest surprise successes in 2024, X-Men '97 is set to return for its highly anticipated second season on July 1, 2026. The newly released trailer promises a larger, darker, and far more ambitious story than anything the animated revival has attempted before, throwing the mutant heroes across ancient Egypt, the distant future, and the familiar 1990s timeline. Season 1 continued the story of the classic 1990s animated series, following the X-Men as they fought to uphold Professor Xavier's dream amid rising anti-mutant tensions. The season culminated in Bastion's war against mutantkind, the tragedy of Genosha, and a climactic battle that left the team scattered across time.
That ending sets the stage for Season 2, with Apocalypse stepping into the spotlight, new mutants arriving, old allies returning, and the fate of multiple timelines hanging in the balance. So, here are the 10 most powerful new and returning X-Men characters you need to keep an eye on in X-Men '97 Season 2.
10. Danger (New)

Despite being a notable character in modern X-Men comics, Danger has never received a major animated or live-action adaptation before X-Men '97; however, she might be one of the most dangerous beings on the entire list, with abilities to take complete control over technology and machinery, near-instant battlefield analysis, and knowledge of virtually every X-Man's fighting style and weakness. Given that the X-Men are scattered across different time periods and facing increasingly advanced threats in season 2, Danger could serve as either a powerful ally or a major antagonist, depending on how closely the series follows the comics.
Danger began life as the X-Men's iconic training facility, the Danger Room. After years of absorbing combat data, adapting to new threats, and evolving with advanced alien Shi'ar technology, the Danger Room eventually developed self-awareness.
However, Professor Xavier ignored its attempts to communicate, leading the newly conscious AI to become resentful toward the X-Men. Eventually, it broke free and created a humanoid body for itself, becoming the sentient being known as Danger.
9. Archangel (Returning)
Following the Season 1 finale, Warren Worthington III is among the mutants reported as missing, confirming that he survived Genosha and remains part of the wider story moving forward. The Season 2 trailer finally shows Warren in his full Archangel form, which is significant because the season heavily revolves around Apocalypse. In the comics and the original animated series, Archangel is Apocalypse's most famous Horseman, making him a natural fit for the upcoming story.
Once one of the original X-Men, Warren began as the heroic Angel, but his life changed forever when Apocalypse remade him into Archangel, a living weapon with razor-sharp metal wings and a darker, more ruthless personality. That transformation turned him into one of the most formidable mutants in Marvel history. Archangel has also appeared in the original X-Men: The Animated Series, including the storyline that adapted his transformation into Apocalypse's Horseman.
8. Psylocke (Returning)
After years of cameo appearances and supporting roles in adaptations, X-Men '97 Season 2 appears ready to finally bring the telepathic warrior back into the spotlight. Psylocke is one of Marvel's most skilled telepaths, capable of reading minds, projecting thoughts, creating psychic illusions, and launching devastating psionic attacks. Her signature ability is the creation of a psychic katana, concentrated blades of mental energy that can disable opponents with a single strike. Beyond her mutant powers, Psylocke is also an elite martial artist, assassin, and hand-to-hand combatant.
The trailer provides fans with their clearest animated look at Psylocke yet. She can be seen wielding her iconic psychic weaponry and fighting alongside other mutants as the season's time-travel storyline unfolds. Her appearance closely resembles the classic 1990s comic design that made her one of Marvel's most popular mutants. Many fans feel no adaptation has fully captured the depth of the character from the comics, making her Season 2 return particularly exciting.
7. Polaris (New)
Like her father, Magneto, Polaris possesses the ability to manipulate magnetic fields. At her peak, she can control and reshape metal, fly using magnetic propulsion, and manipulate Earth's magnetic field on a massive scale. In many comic storylines, Polaris is portrayed as one of the few mutants whose powers closely resemble Magneto's. While she generally lacks his experience and mastery, her raw potential is extraordinary. She also spends much of her life unaware that she is the daughter of Magneto. After discovering the truth, she struggles with the weight of her family legacy, trying to forge her own identity as a hero.
Among the newcomers, Polaris appears to have one of the most significant roles, as she will play a key role affecting both the X-Men and the X-Force-related storylines in X-Men '97 Season 2. Meanwhile, trailer breakdowns suggest she may become involved with Forge and Bishop's efforts to reunite the time-displaced X-Men. Polaris did not have an active role in Season 1. She never joined the main story and had no dialogue-driven subplot.
However, she appeared in one of Magneto's visions involving his children. This appearance was essentially an Easter egg rather than a true character appearance.
6. Apocalypse (Returning)
When it comes to raw power, experience, and sheer influence over mutant history, few characters can rival Apocalypse. The ancient mutant has spent thousands of years shaping civilizations from the shadows, and after lurking on the edges of Season 1, he's finally stepping into the spotlight as Season 2's central villain. Born En Sabah Nur in ancient Egypt, Apocalypse is one of Marvel's oldest and most powerful mutants. His abilities include regeneration and near-immortality, with the ability to empower and transform others into Horsemen as well.
What makes Apocalypse especially dangerous is that his power goes far beyond combat. He has spent millennia accumulating knowledge, technology, and followers, allowing him to manipulate entire civilizations. Defeating him requires far more than simply winning a fight. His philosophy of "survival of the fittest" is often just as threatening as his powers. Previously, he was brought to life in X-Men: Apocalypse, where he was portrayed by Oscar Isaac. He has also appeared in numerous Marvel video games, animated projects, and comic adaptations over the years.
5. Storm (Returning)
Revered as a goddess in some parts of the world and feared as one of the most powerful mutants alive, Ororo Munroe enters X-Men '97 Season 2 as a battle-hardened leader whose journey in Season 1 transformed her more than almost any other member of the team. In the comics, Storm has redirected hurricanes, battled gods, manipulated planetary climates, and even wielded the mystical hammer of Thor on multiple occasions, making her an Omega-level mutant with control over the whole universe's weather system. Her power is so immense that many Marvel characters consider her one of the most dangerous mutants on Earth.
The Season 2 trailer gives Storm several standout moments, where she appears wielding lightning once again, sporting new costume variations, and participating in battles that span multiple time periods, which has sparked speculation among fans about a possible Phoenix-related storyline, though Marvel has not confirmed that theory. What is clear is that Storm remains at the heart of the action, much like her role throughout X-Men: The Animated Series, and the original X-Men film trilogy.
4. Magneto (Returning)
Another Omega-level mutant, Magneto, is also returning in Season 2 as a man stranded at the very beginning of Apocalypse's rise, after dominating much of X-Men '97 Season 1. Born Erik Lehnsherr, Magneto survived the Holocaust as a child, an experience that shaped his worldview forever. Unlike Charles Xavier, who believes humans and mutants can coexist peacefully, Magneto believes mutants must be prepared to fight for survival in a world that fears them. Despite often being portrayed as a villain, Magneto's motivations are rooted in protecting mutantkind. Over the years, he has led the Brotherhood of Mutants, ruled Genosha, taught Xavier's students, and even served as a member of the X-Men.
Season 2 picks up with Magneto stranded in 3000 BC Egypt, where he, Professor Xavier, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler find themselves at the dawn of Apocalypse's story. That places Magneto in a uniquely fascinating position: one of mutant history's most influential figures now faces one of mutant history's oldest and most dangerous mutants. Marvel has not revealed the full extent of his storyline, but given his importance in Season 1 and his location in Apocalypse's era, it's hard to imagine Season 2 without Magneto playing a major role in the conflict.
3. Rachel Summers (New)
Rachel Summers is the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey from an alternate future timeline, and like her mother, she possesses extraordinary telepathic and telekinetic abilities. In the comics, Rachel has often been portrayed as one of the few mutants capable of rivaling Jean Grey herself. When bonded with the Phoenix Force, her power reaches truly cosmic levels. Rachel originates from the dystopian "Days of Future Past" timeline, where mutants were hunted by Sentinels, and much of mutantkind was wiped out. After escaping that future, she traveled through time and eventually joined the X-Men.
While Marvel has not explicitly identified every character in the X-Men '97 Season 2 trailer, multiple trailer breakdowns point to Rachel Summers as one of the major new additions connected to Cyclops and Jean's future-based storyline, and given that Season 1 finale introduced Mother Askani in the distant future when Cyclops and Jean Grey arrived in the year 3960 A.D. Many fans immediately recognized the character's connection to Rachel Summers from the comics. Her appearance is one of the clearest signs that X-Men '97 is diving deeper into the complex Summers family mythology that helped define many of the comics' biggest stories.
2. Jean Grey (Returning)
Jean Grey is widely regarded as one of the most powerful psychic beings in the Marvel Universe, because even before the Phoenix Force enters the equation, her abilities include Omega-level telepathy and telekinesis, mind-reading and memory manipulation, astral projection, psychic shielding, and mental communication across vast distances. When bonded with the Phoenix, Jean's abilities expand into the cosmic realm, allowing her to manipulate matter and energy on a scale few Marvel characters can rival. Even without the Phoenix, she remains one of the strongest mutants ever born.
She was one of the main protagonists throughout X-Men '97 Season 1, and Season 2 picks up with Jean and Cyclops stranded in the year 3960 A.D. after the events of the Season 1 finale. There, they encounter the Askani and become entangled in a future storyline deeply connected to Cable and the Summers family legacy. Given Jean's connection to Cable, Rachel Summers, and the broader future timeline mythology, she is expected to be one of the central figures driving that portion of the story.
1. Exodus (New)
If there is one newcomer capable of challenging nearly every mutant on this list, it's Exodus. A character long revered by comic readers but largely unknown to casual audiences, Bennet du Paris enters X-Men '97 Season 2 carrying a reputation as one of the most powerful mutants Marvel has ever created. With the Season 2 trailer confirming his arrival, the animated series is finally bringing one of mutantkind's greatest heavy hitters to the screen.

In the comics, Exodus has battled entire teams of X-Men, resisted attacks from some of Marvel's strongest telepaths, and unleashed enough power to devastate large areas single-handedly. Few mutants possess such a broad combination of psychic and physical abilities. Marvel has not revealed his storyline. However, because Season 2 revolves heavily around Apocalypse and the X-Men's time-displacement crisis, many fans expect Exodus's historic connection to Apocalypse to play a role in the story. Exodus has never been a significant character in the Fox films or previous animated X-Men series, so X-Men '97 would effectively serve as his first major screen adaptation. These are the 10 most powerful X-Men characters set to appear in X-Men '97 Season 2, as the mutant heroes battle their way across the past, present, and future in Marvel's highly anticipated next chapter.
