Yellowstone showrunner Taylor Sheridan has revealed Kevin Costner's exit was not due to a feud, but owing to the end of his contract. Yellowstone became a huge TV phenomenon in part because Kevin Costner gave John Dutton its gravitas, its conflict, and its sense of worn-down authority. His exit shocked fans because it felt like the center of the show had suddenly been pulled away, and rumors about backstage tension only made the departure seem more dramatic.
Now, Taylor Sheridan is offering a different explanation, and it changes the way Costner’s exit looks in hindsight.

On The Bill Simmons Podcast, Taylor Sheridan addressed the situation of Kevin Costner's departure. He explained how Costner was to be on Yellowstone for just the first three seasons, something that was a part of his contract.
“Kevin was only supposed to be in the first three seasons. That was in his contract. In my mind, that’s when his youngest son takes over and we have to watch them lose their ranch or not lose their ranch or whatever the case was going to be,” Sheridan said. He also pushed back against the idea that Costner was forced out against his wishes.
“The network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it. Even though Kevin was ready to go. He had other things he wanted to do. But he stayed on for another two seasons,” he told on the podcast. That paints a picture where the delay came from extending a successful formula rather than any personal fallout. He then framed the split as a matter of creative timing instead of conflict.
“Kevin hit a point where he was like, ‘I’ve got to do my own thing,’” Sheridan recalled. “And I was like, I’ve got to do my own thing too.” He added that the original three-season plan might have kept the story moving more cleanly, suggesting the show had to stretch its narrative longer than intended.
While that chapter closes, the franchise is already pushing forward with new stories and bigger ambitions.
The next chapter for the Yellowstone universe
The world of Yellowstone is already proving it can evolve beyond its original core, and Paramount+ is leaning into that momentum with a second season for the spin-off Dutton Ranch. What began as a continuation of familiar characters is now shifting toward something broader, aiming to stand on its own identity.

Season 2 of Dutton Ranch has been officially green-lit, though it comes with changes behind the scenes. Chad Feehan has stepped away as showrunner and executive producer before the first season even aired, although he remains credited as creator, having written the premiere and co-written another episode. That transition could influence the tone going forward as the series balances its roots with new storytelling directions.
For now, the first season is heading toward its finale on July 3, 2026, with the network highlighting the continued popularity of Beth and Rip as central figures. Strong viewership has already made it one of the biggest launches for a Paramount+ original, which explains the early renewal.
