Seven years is a long time for a filmmaker to stay away from the big screen. Armando Iannucci, the sharp mind behind The Death of Stalin and Veep, has spent the intervening years exploring other creative avenues, leaving cinephiles waiting impatiently. Now, that wait is finally gaining momentum, with accomplished performers like JamesMcAvoy, Taron Egerton and Alicia Vikander attached to a mysterious new project.

Despite not having a lot to work with, the names attached to Iannucci’s return are already giving the project considerable intrigue.

James McAvoy, Taron Egerton, and Alicia Vikander are coming together for Armando Iannucci’s next feature, as per Deadline. It is currently an untitled conspiracy thriller that will mark a first collaboration between the director and all three performers. McAvoy has built a career on sharp turns between vulnerability and menace, from the fractured identities of Split to the politics in State of Play, while Egerton has moved from the swagger of Kingsman to the emotional transformation of Rocketman.

Both bring a knack for characters whose outward confidence can conceal something considerably messier.

Vikander, meanwhile, has moved comfortably between cerebral science fiction, historical drama, and action, with Ex Machina, The Danish Girl, and Tomb Raider showcasing different sides of her screen presence. She has previously shared the screen with Egerton in Testament of Youth and with McAvoy in Submergence, though the upcoming film marks a new combination for the trio under Iannucci.

Their different screen personas offer the director a versatile ensemble for a story whose central secrets have yet to be disclosed, as per Deadline.

The cast is taking shape before the plot has come into focus, leaving the filmmaker’s next move as the real question.

Armando Iannucci returns to the big screen

Armando Iannucci’s last feature, The Personal History of David Copperfield, arrived in 2019, reworking Charles Dickens through the filmmaker’s characteristically playful lens. Since then, he has continued to work across television and theatre, but this new project represents his next feature-length outing as writer and director. A conspiracy thriller is a shift in genre from his best-known films, although suspicion, manipulation, and power games have long been part of his storytelling vocabulary.

The film is being prepared for the American Film Market, where FilmNation Entertainment and UTA Independent Film Group will take the project to prospective buyers. Producer Kevin Loader is reuniting with Iannucci, continuing a partnership that includes In the Loop, The Death of Stalin, and The Personal History of David Copperfield.

With no title, plot synopsis, or release date announced, the film remains an unusually closed box for a project already drawing attention; for now, the combination of Iannucci’s return and a fresh ensemble is the clearest reason to keep watching.
