The director, Taika Waititi, explained to Vanity Fair that when it was time to cast Klara, he was looking for a performer who felt young, hip, and inherently cool for Klara and the Sun. After meeting Jenna Ortega, who gained immense global fame starring on the hit Netflix series Wednesday, he discovered she also possessed a wonderfully eccentric streak.
“She was young and hip and cool and weird. And that sort of appealed to me,” he said. The filmmaker admitted that the actress possesses an incredibly advanced intellect. He welcomed that professional discomfort as a sign of her immense talent.
"She had sort of made me feel uncomfortable and a little bit out of my depth, and I thought, Oh, that’s a good challenge," Waititi stated when describing their initial creative meetings.
Wednesday as a character stands in total contrast to the gothic persona of Klara, but Taika Waititi notes that Jenna Ortega, in real life, is so opposite of her role in Wednesday.
“She’s super charming and really fun and funny. I was really keen to see that version of her onscreen,” she said to Vanity Fair. Her character, Klara, operates as an Artificial Friend engineered specifically to prevent human teenagers from experiencing loneliness.
An exceptional ensemble of acclaimed Hollywood actors joins the young starlet to bring this futuristic society to life.
The star-studded cast and anticipated cinematic release
Klara and the Sun features a spectacular lineup. Academy Award nominee Amy Adams and the versatile Simon Baker portray key parental figures navigating the complex technological landscape. Renowned actors Natasha Lyonne and Steve Buscemi also join the ensemble alongside talented newcomers like Aran Murphy, who portrays a close human companion named Rick.
The supporting lineup is further strengthened by Antonia Prebble as Fiona, Michelle Ang, Harry Greenwood, and Davida McKenzie as Simone. Additionally, David Fane brings humour to the project as the Rebel Robot Arnold, while Bronwyn Bradley embodies the character of Miriam. This diverse group of performers ensures a deeply moving exploration of human relationships in a world dominated by advanced artificial intelligence.
