Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who is preparing to step aside after a decade of steering the Star Wars behemoth, has already gone on record assuring the industry that Taika Waititi’s long-gestating project remains in active development. Now, in a conversation with Variety, Waititi has added his own carefully measured fuel to the speculation, suggesting that his Star Wars entry will take a decidedly different approach. Coming from a filmmaker whose career has thrived on bending franchises to his will, the promise lands less as bravado and more as expectation, one the studio seems content to let simmer.

"The stakes are very high, and there’s serious things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in those films. That’s what I was trying to bring back,” Waititi said.

Following the polarizing response to Thor: Love and Thunder, industry watchers and fans alike are keen to see whether Taika Waititi’s upcoming Star Wars film will recapture the charm and emotional grounding of his earlier work. From Hunt for the Wilderpeople to What We Do in the Shadows, Waititi has built a reputation for blending humor with genuine heart. At the same time, his experience with blockbuster filmmaking is firmly established, having directed two Marvel Studios entries, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. The question now is how those sensibilities will translate to the Star Wars universe.

As for the Star Wars project, fans may not have to wait much longer. Until then, the director is left to juggle a hectic schedule with his upcoming project.

Taika Waititi takes on a villain role in a new movie

Fing! premiered in the Family Matinee section at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and became the festival’s pleasant surprise. Directed by Jeffrey Walker and based on David Walliams’ bestselling children’s book, the film leans into whimsical storytelling. The story follows 12-year-old Myrtle Meek, a determined child who becomes obsessed with owning a rare mythical creature known as a Fing, which sees her loving father get started on a chaotic journey to find one.

Things take a turn when the Fing turns out to be a destructive, one-eyed creature with a mind of its own. Taika Waititi steals the spotlight, supported by a strong ensemble that includes newcomer Iona Bell, Mia Wasikowska, Blake Harrison, Penelope Wilton, and Walliams himself in a brief role.

Fing! serves as a timely reminder of Waititi’s ability to balance chaos with charm, a skill that has long defined his best work, and which is what the upcoming Star Wars movie is expected to be brimming of. In a galaxy preparing for life after Kathleen Kennedy, that combination may prove to be exactly the shake-up the franchise needs.
