A film can arrive on streaming with the weight of a theatrical hit behind it and still find itself competing for attention all over again. That has not been much of a problem for Sydney Sweeney’s latest thriller, The Housemaid, whose commercial run made it one of the year’s more conspicuous box-office performers.

Its move to HBO Max has given audiences another chance to get caught up in the story, and the platform’s latest US chart suggests that interest has hardly cooled. The rankings offer another indication that the film’s theatrical audience has not had its fill just yet.

As of November 8, The Housemaid is No. 3 on HBO Max’s US movie chart, according to FlixPatrol, keeping it among the platform’s most-watched films weeks after its October 9 streaming debut. It has eased from the No. 2 position it held on November 7, but remains ahead of a crowded field of catalogue titles and newer releases. The ranking gives the thriller another win beyond cinemas, where its audience clearly had not finished with it on the service.

That streaming performance follows a theatrical run that turned a $35 million production into a worldwide hit. Box Office Mojo lists The Housemaid’s global gross at approximately $400.48 million, made up of around $126.43 million in North America and $274.05 million internationally.

It opened domestically to roughly $19 million, then held well enough across subsequent weekends to build a total far beyond its initial launch. The box-office result gave the film considerable momentum before its arrival on HBO Max for the studio.

Sydney Sweeney Kicks off 'The Housemaid’s Secret' Filming With Kirsten Dunst and New Co-stars

The film’s premise offers a few clues as to why audiences have been so willing to follow Millie into the Winchester household.

Why The Housemaid’s appeal could carry into its sequel

Based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, The Housemaid follows Millie, a young woman with a troubled past who takes a live-in housekeeping job with the Winchester family. Sydney Sweeney plays Millie, while Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar portray Nina and Andrew Winchester, whose polished home gradually reveals a darker reality. The setup gives the film a familiar domestic-thriller framework, but its shifting loyalties, concealed histories and escalating twists keep the audience questioning who is in control.

That mix may help explain why the film has travelled so well: it offers a recognizable star, a contained and unsettling setting, and the kind of revelations that invite viewers to keep watching and discussing what they have seen. Lionsgate has confirmed a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, for December 17, 2027, with Sweeney, Michele Morrone and director Paul Feig returning; Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast.

Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar’s return has not been confirmed, leaving the next chapter’s Winchester connections uncertain.
