When one thinks of the emotional anchors of the hit crime-drama show, RJ Mitte’s Walter White Jr. was among the most important of them all. Now, following an unthinkable loss that has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and the hearts of millions of fans, the tight-knit family behind one of television's greatest masterpieces is coming together to mourn one of their own. 

Among those who paid their respects recently are Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and co-stars who shared deeply moving tributes remembering the late R.J. Mitte. 

RJ Mitte, who managed cerebral palsy diagnosed during his childhood and grew into a dedicated advocate for disability rights, passed away on Monday in Brownsville, Texas, according to his representatives. While an official cause of death has not been disclosed, TMZ reported that he died by suicide.

Mitte achieved widespread recognition for his unforgettable portrayal of Walter White Jr., the son of Walter and Skyler White - played by Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn - on Vince Gilligan’s acclaimed, Emmy-winning series, which aired for five seasons between 2008 and 2013. The co-stars of Breaking Bad are honoring R.J. Mitte following his passing at the age of 34.

“I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad has died,” Cranston shared in a lengthy post on Instagram.

“I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed… I’ll miss you, son,” the Emmy-winning actor said, concluding his post.

Aaron Paul and Dean Norris, two former cast members of Breaking Bad, also took to social media honoring Mitte.

“I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed,” Paul said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“He was a sweetheart of a young man and will be greatly missed. This is so heartbreaking, I can’t believe it,” Norris wrote in his social media post.

In his post, Cranston also mentions that just a few weeks ago they were texting, coming up with a plan to have lunch together. According to the actor, Mitte taking his own life, as reported by TMZ, was totally unexpected, and he wondered if that lunch could have changed things.

This can be confirmed from his recent appearance on a podcast where he appeared to be normal, fondly talking about his Breaking Bad parents - Cranston and Gunn.

During an appearance on The Joe Vulpis Podcast earlier this month, RJ Mitte reflected fondly on his time working alongside Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn on the hit crime drama. He praised the veteran actors for their deep industry experience and wealth of knowledge, noting that despite the series' grim storylines and heavy subject matter, the atmosphere on set remained remarkably lighthearted and positive between takes.

Mitte leveraged his public platform to champion increased visibility and inclusion for individuals with disabilities, taking on roles as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s while also leading The Mitte Foundation as president. Last year, he celebrated a major personal milestone when he proposed to his partner of five years, Kennedy Suarez, during a United Cerebral Palsy fundraising gala.
