Just when Hondo Harrelson seemed ready to hang up his badge, S.W.A.T. found another way to keep its iconic commander in the game. CBS canceled the original procedural in March 2025 after several near-cancellations, ending its run in May. But Sony Pictures Television and Shemar Moore had already been plotting a franchise escape route, S.W.A.T. Exiles.

Now, the 10-episode spinoff brings back Shemar Moore as Sergeant II Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr., the seasoned leader fans know and love.

Shemar Moore is officially back as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson in S.W.A.T. Exiles, with STARZ promotional materials and exclusive interviews confirming his return before the spinoff premiered. The gritty action drama arrived on September 25, 2026, picking up two years after S.W.A.T. ended. This time, Hondo has no badge, no marriage, and very little left to lose.

A catastrophic botched raid killed young operator Nico Reyes and ultimately forced Hondo out of the LAPD, leaving the veteran commander divorced and living alone. His new career is hardly what anyone expected, as Hondo reluctantly works as a private bodyguard for wealthy Los Angeles tech billionaires. Then former commanding officer LAPD Commander Robert Hicks offers him another way forward.

Hicks gives Hondo one final chance at redemption: building and leading an experimental S.W.A.T. unit made entirely of outsiders and recruits overlooked by everyone else. It is a very different command for the seasoned officer, who must turn a collection of unconventional recruits into a functioning tactical team. Hondo may have lost his old unit, but his S.W.A.T. story is clearly not finished.

With S.W.A.T. finding a new home at STARZ and Shemar Moore back as Hondo, Exiles had one more surprise in store for fans

Shemar Moore is not the only familiar face returning for S.W.A.T. Exiles. Jay Harrington reprises Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay in the pilot, while Patrick St. Esprit returns as LAPD Commander Robert Hicks, whose intervention helps pull Hondo back into the S.W.A.T. world. Their appearances give the new series an immediate connection to its predecessor without taking over Hondo’s story.

David Lim also returns as Victor Tan, although fans have to wait longer for his appearance. Lim is scheduled to guest star closer to the season finale, turning the penultimate episode into another opportunity for a familiar face to walk back into Hondo’s orbit. Together, the cameos make Exiles feel less like a goodbye and more like a continuation of the franchise.
