Superman did not merely conquer 2025; he practically made the box office kneel before the cape. James Gunn’s film grossed $618.7 million worldwide, outpaced Man of Steel domestically, earned Warner Bros. over $100 million in profit, and became 2025’s highest-selling PVOD release. With an 83% Rotten Tomatoes score and an A- CinemaScore, the DCU reset was undeniably super.
Yet apparently, one year of victory laps is not enough for the Man of Steel. Superman is now taking another flight around the Critics' Choice Super Awards with six nominations.

Superman has spent 2026 doing what Superman apparently considers a quiet little follow-up to conquering 2025. James Gunn’s DC Studios blockbuster leads the film categories at the 6th Annual Critics' Choice Super Awards with six nominations, including Best Superhero Movie. The Man of Steel has returned to the awards circuit, cape pressed and victory lap apparently endless.
David Corenswet received a Best Actor in a Superhero Movie nomination for playing Clark Kent and Superman, while Edi Gathegi earned the same recognition for Michael Holt and Mister Terrific. Rachel Brosnahan joined them with a Best Actress in a Superhero Movie nomination for Lois Lane. Somewhere, the Daily Planet is preparing a very flattering headline.

Nicholas Hoult, however, has decided that one nomination is a perfectly respectable number to double. The actor is nominated for Best Actor in a Superhero Movie as Lex Luthor and Best Villain in a Movie, giving Superman two chances to lose to him or, more satisfyingly, to win despite him.
As fans eagerly await Supergirl’s return in Man of Tomorrow, they are also looking forward to seeing whether the Man of Steel can take home Best Superhero Movie.
Can Superman fly away with the Best Superhero Movie trophy?
Superman has entered the Best Superhero Movie race with the kind of résumé that makes competitors check whether Kryptonite is allowed under the rules. James Gunn’s DC Studios blockbuster grossed $618 million worldwide, comfortably outpacing The Fantastic Four: First Steps and its $241.3 million haul. The Man of Steel movie also arrives with prior wins from the Astra Film Awards and IGN readers.
The closest high-profile challenger is The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which earned four nominations but has considerably less box office muscle behind it. Supergirl is another familiar DCU face in the race, although weaker commercial results and softer reviews make an upset less likely. The remaining contenders bring plenty of genre appeal, but none quite match Superman’s broad critical and industry momentum.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is the wild card after its historic anime box office run, while Exit 8, Masters of the Universe, and Mortal Kombat II add more specialized competition. Still, Superman has the money, the reviews, the previous wins, and the cultural reach that make the Man of Steel look like the film to beat for Best Superhero Movie.
