Superman III's ‘Evil Superman’ Suit heads to auction. Christopher Reeve’s Superman costume remains one of the most recognizable outfits in superhero movie history, instantly tied to the character’s hopeful image of the Man of Steel. But Superman III gave that familiar look a darker twist when the film introduced an “evil” version of Superman, powered by synthetic kryptonite and marked by a more hardened presence.
That unsettling variation is now about to take center stage again, as the suit is headed to auction.

The costume going up for sale is a screen-used five-piece ensemble worn by Christopher Reeve in Superman III, including the blue tunic and tights, maroon trunks, gold belt, and red cape. According to the auction listing, it appeared in key moments from the film, including the junkyard confrontation between Superman and his darker alter ego.
The outfit also carries production markings tied to Bermans & Nathans, along with signs consistent with on-screen use. Its ownership history adds another layer of interest. The suit reportedly originated from Warner Bros., later passed into private hands, and was sold through Profiles in History in 2011 before resurfacing again.
It will now be offered by Heritage Auctions during its Hollywood and Entertainment Signature Auction, with bidding set to begin at $100,000. For collectors, this is more than memorabilia. It represents a striking moment in superhero storytelling. Reeve’s dual performance in Superman III balanced the character’s charm with a darker edge, and this costume stands as a physical reminder of that transformation.
While the past is being celebrated at auction, the present state of Superman films tells a very different story.
Box office struggles raise questions for the Superman brand
The current performance of Supergirl at the box office points to a challenging moment for the broader Superman-related slate. The film dropped 74 % in its second weekend, bringing in $9.6 million domestically and reaching $58.47 million after 10 days. Internationally, it added another $48 million, taking its worldwide total to $100.4 million.

That trajectory is concerning given its reported production cost of around $170 million before marketing. At that scale, the film would require a much stronger global run to break even. Current projections suggest losses could exceed $100 million if the trend continues. Viewers showed up for event-driven releases, while superhero fatigue appeared to limit Supergirl’s staying power. Despite the recognition tied to DC characters, the film struggled to maintain momentum.
For a franchise built on one of cinema’s most enduring heroes, this moment reflects a deeper issue. It is not only about one film underperforming, but about changing audience engagement in a crowded market where even established names are no longer guaranteed success.
