Milly Alcock stepping into Supergirl feels like DC Studios finally locking onto the emotional texture that has defined Kara Zor-El for decades. Alcock carries a screen presence that swings between guarded vulnerability and raw intensity within seconds, making her a natural fit for a character who has spent years navigating grief, isolation, and the impossible weight of living beside the Superman legacy. Now, that same intensity is powering Kara Zor-El in Supergirl, the highly anticipated DCU film arriving in theaters on June 26, 2026.
Yet behind the cosmic spectacle and cape mythology, Alcock recently revealed a deeply vulnerable moment from the set that transformed the role from another blockbuster opportunity into something far more personal.

In a recent interview with Variety, Milly Alcock shared that one of the most emotional moments on the Supergirl set happened during her very first appearance in costume. DC Studios executive vice president of production Chantal Nong reportedly broke down in tears the moment Alcock stepped out in costume. Peter Safran recalled the atmosphere with laughter and disbelief, explaining that everyone on set instantly felt that Alcock completely embodied Kara Zor-El.
“Chantal just cried, and I hugged her, and I was like, ‘Are you OK?...That’s when I understood,” she says. “I’ve got a responsibility.” Only afterward did Nong explain that she had spent years trying to bring Supergirl to life on screen.
The film itself carries a formidable ensemble surrounding Alcock. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl stars Matthias Schoenaerts as the ruthless Krem of the Yellow Hills, alongside David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham. The project also continues the broader connective tissue of James Gunn’s evolving DC Universe after Alcock’s introduction in Superman.
Still, the wildest twist in this origin story is that Alcock nearly walked away from it entirely.
The role that almost scared Milly Alcock away
In the same interview, Milly Alcock admitted that the scale of Supergirl nearly pushed her into retreat mode. Unlike House of the Dragon, where she shared narrative focus inside a sprawling ensemble, Supergirl placed her firmly at the center of the universe.
“I was like, ‘I have to do all that?! No!‘ Because she’s in, like, every scene,” Alcock shared with Variety.
“My personal experience of being Milly mirrored Kara’s experience, which was ‘Hide. Run away. Pretend it’s not happening.' And then you have to face it to heal a part of yourself that you’ve been neglecting.”
What ultimately changed her mind was how deeply Kara’s emotional struggle mirrored her own. Alcock explained that both she and Supergirl shared the instinct to hide, run away, and pretend difficult things were not happening. But confronting fear became the entire point. She looked in the mirror and realized she could not reject an opportunity simply because it frightened her.

That emotional honesty may become the defining heartbeat of DC’s new Supergirl era. Instead of portraying Kara as merely another invincible cape soaring through CGI skylines, Alcock seems determined to ground her in bruised humanity, survivor’s guilt, and emotional reckoning.
Supergirl reaches theaters on June 26, 2026, and if these early behind-the-scenes stories are any indication, Milly Alcock may already be carrying the emotional soul of the DCU on her shoulders.
