'Supergirl' Trailer Breakdown: 6 Major Arcs, Storylines, and Big Surprises Revealed So Far

Published 03/31/2026, 4:00 PM EDT

After an introductory cameo in James Gunn's Superman (2025) and the release of the official teaser trailer, Supergirl’s hype was at its peak. The excitement for Milly Alcock’s rendition of Kara Zor-El was mostly because of the approach taken to portray her version of Supergirl in a more mature and jaded way than the earlier live-action versions. While the teaser gave us the basic idea of the character and quest of Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, an official trailer has been released to add to the existing details.

The trailer provides a lot of key insights about the arcs and storylines, which need to be discussed before walking into the film.

Hard-partying, trauma-driven Supergirl

The trailer for Supergirl, dropped on March 31, 2026, shows Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El drinking and partying on another planet with a red sun so that she can get drunk. The reason behind her alcoholic behavior is the trauma of losing her home, Krypton. Unlike her cousin Kal-El (Superman), she has watched the destruction of her planet with her own eyes, and that trauma still haunts her. To suppress the sense of doom, she soaks herself in the haze to escape the memories of the place she once called home.

A traumatic past leads the way for a cynic to embark on a journey to avenge someone else’s cause.

Revenge quest with Ruthye Marye Knoll

The new trailer gives further context to Eve Ridley's Ruthye Marye Knoll and her quest for revenge. Ruthye is a little girl who needs Kara's assistance after the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills kills her family. Although reluctant at first, Kara, who knows the feeling of losing loved ones, agrees to help Ruthye.

James Gunn Announces ‘Supergirl’ Release Date With New Tease

Her reluctance to help Ruthye shows how inherently poles apart the cousins are.

Dark contrast to Superman’s optimism

While Superman is the poster boy for hope, Supergirl seems to be a cynic who has no interest in seeing any way near hope. This darker tone is all thanks to the source material, Tom King and Bilquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, on which James Gunn’s Supergirl is based. Her trauma from the past inhibits her willingness to see optimism for the future.

Supergirl's brash ways, however, will be joined by a certain someone’s similar tendencies.

Jason Momoa debuts as Lobo

The teaser trailer already revealed Jason Momoa’s character, Lobo, to be in the movie, and now the trailer has given further context to his role. He seems to be taking up the role of a begrudging ally to Kara in the trailer. There is not a lot confirmed about his character in the film, as he is not in the source material, but in the trailer, it seems that he will be lending a helping hand in Supergirl’s fight against Krem.

Although the trailer does not reveal a lot about Jason Momoa’s Lobo, it does show Supergirl’s pooch in pain.

Krypto’s emotional, near-fatal storyline

Supergirl’s trusted companion and the most important part of her living family, Krypto the dog, was shown being attacked by Krem, which left him fatally wounded. He now has three days, and Kara needs to find a way to heal him before it is too late. Krypto’s life-threatening injury becomes the reason for Supergirl's first meeting with Ruthye.

Getting Krypto back to normal will be one of the important storylines of the movie, which will also add emotional depth to Supergirl’s character in this gruff space western setting.

Gritty “space western” across the galaxy

Tom King and Bilquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book actually tries to emulate the Western novel True Grit. The writers have just blended the elements from the western novel into a high fantasy space adventure. The result is a world that feels like the backdrop of a wasteland. The world in Supergirl also feels a lot like that of Guardians of the Galaxy, taking into account James Gunn’s influence on the film.

The trailer gave enough without revealing too much about the plot and the character. The expectations have just increased in light of the new information received from the trailer, and it will be interesting to see how all these storylines and arcs work together to make the movie engaging. Meanwhile, the first reactions to the trailer drop are promising an audience hyped above and beyond, with everyone weighing in on the possible route the story might take. What will ultimately happen in the movie will only be revealed upon its release.
