Supergirl has secured a fresh 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes before its wide theatrical rollout. Director Craig Gillespie's highly anticipated blockbuster, Supergirl, recently celebrated its glittering world premiere in Brooklyn ahead of its wide theatrical rollout. While initial responses have ignited passionate debates among dedicated comic book fans, history proves that early critical reviews rarely tell the final story.
However, this initial wave of critical feedback sets the stage for an intriguing battle between industry experts and passionate general audiences.

The upcoming comic book adaptation Supergirl initially debuted to a modest 59% score, but fresh reviews have steadily pushed the Tomato-meter up to 61 percent, and then down to 57% based on a now summed up 115 reviews as of 24 June 2026. However, a large portion of the audience remains fiercely defensive, noting that early critic aggregates frequently deviate drastically from eventual audience reactions.
The mixed 57% critical score for Supergirl stands in sharp contrast to past Superman films, which traditionally enjoy much stronger critical debuts. While Christopher Reeve's iconic Superman (1978) achieved a masterful 94% score and Superman Returns (2006) secured a solid 75% rating, James Gunn’s recent Superman (2025) also claimed critical success with an impressive 83% to 87% score.
Rotten Tomatoes states that the upcoming movie lags due to low critic scores. Supergirl breaks away from the vibrant, crowd-pleasing heroism of its predecessors to establish a much grittier, unconventional tone, but not to forget films like Michael, Scary Movie (2026), and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which are heavily criticized for lacking depth and protecting the subject's estate, while fans love them and got heavy theatrical success.
The unique creative direction of this specific project separates it completely from traditional, bright superhero origin stories.
Supergirl - A gritty space western rooted in deep cosmic trauma
The adventurous narrative of Supergirl is based on the popular Woman of Tomorrow comic. Unlike her famous cousin Kal-El, protagonist Kara Zor-El, masterfully portrayed by actress Milly Alcock, vividly remembers the tragic destruction of her home planet. This heavy emotional burden transforms her into a deeply traumatized and disillusioned character rather than a perfectly polished saviour.
Instead of focusing on traditional Earth-bound protection missions, the central plot revolves around a cosmic quest to save her beloved companion, Krypto. The narrative features a heavy space-themed redemption arc that even shows the protagonist navigating deep personal despair across alien worlds before finding her true purpose.

The project safely earned a PG-13 rating by leaning into a punk-rock, space-western aesthetic filled with intense action sequences. While the early 57% critical score for Supergirl has caused temporary anxiety among fans, the film's unconventional, trauma-driven narrative and gritty style suggest it possesses the exact ingredients to become a massive favourite among general audiences.
