It seems like Supergirl is barely scraping by at the box office after its release on June 26. The poor box office run was followed by scathingly dismal reviews from critics and viewers alike, who found the film to be weak and lacking any emotional depth. Now, those in charge of the comic book giant's film and television divisions appear to be prepared to stop the DC Universe (DCU) film's theatrical run after it barely made $100 million worldwide last weekend (July 3-5).
It seems like Supergirl is officially set to change tactics and hope for some reprieve in the digital space soon enough.

Just over 30 days after its theatrical premiere, on July 28, 2026, Supergirl is speculated to be available for purchase or rental on Digital HD platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Vudu, and Google Play Movies, per DC Film News on X. However, a streaming release still has to wait, which is expected to be sometime in late September on HBO Max.
It is worth mentioning that the release date does not come from an official source like Warner Bros. or DC Films. Rather, it is based on multiple industry reports and leaks, which all point to a July 28 digital release. Supergirl, which was scripted by Ana Nogueira and directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya and Cruella), is just the second feature film in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU.
And with that, clouds of doubt have started to gather around James Gunn’s new DCU. Supergirl has only made $100.5 million worldwide despite a rumored $170 million-$186 million production budget, while earning mixed reviews from reviewers. This could be the reason the company is allegedly trying to get the film onto digital streaming as soon as possible.
The main weakness of the film is widely believed to have been the plot and, more importantly, the villain, which did not generate enough intrigue.
Supergirl’s obvious weak points
The main criticism of Supergirl stems from the fact that the script did not provide a satisfying development arc for the character of Supergirl. Her journey to save Krypto and help her unlikely companion, Ruthye Marye Knoll, take her revenge lacks any emotional depth. This ultimately prevents the audience from connecting with the protagonist and her quest in the film.

Another strong pain point of the movie is its villain, Krem, whom the critics pointed out was a low-level threat to Supergirl to begin with. With a villain as weak as him, the stakes never appear to rise to a catastrophic level, thus stripping away all the excitement. It seems now the movie will set up shop in the digital domain and try to sell its pain points there soon.
