Super Bowl LXI is officially getting a Star Wars makeover from Disney. Football’s biggest night has always come with fireworks, halftime spectacles, and commercials worth debating for weeks. Next year, the broadcast booth is about to feel far more crowded with droids, aliens, and animated heroes. Disney has spent months stacking alternate ways to watch the game, and this one is the most out of this world.
While most fans pick a side of the field, Disney now asks them to pick a side of the Force, and the details are surprisingly specific.
Star Wars Funday Football turns Super Bowl LXI into an animated galaxy
Disney will air Star Wars Funday Football, a real-time animated telecast of Super Bowl LXI set in the Star Wars universe, on Sunday, February 14, 2027. It will stream and air across Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and the ESPN App. Every play will be recreated as it happens, with players transformed into animated avatars. Star Wars characters will sub in at key moments, and surprise nods to the films will pop up throughout the game.

The announcement came through a combined video clip from ESPN and the official Star Wars YouTube channel. C-3PO plays a significant role, and Anthony Daniels, the original actor behind the golden droid, will take part. Disney turns live play into animation by pairing the NFL’s Next Gen Stats with Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking. Settings, commentators, and characters arrive in the coming weeks. Five days later, Lucasfilm celebrates 50 years of the franchise with the restored 1977 original in theaters on February 19.
Not every Disney option lives in a galaxy far away, as one very loud host keeps things firmly on Earth.
Pat McAfee and Field Pass join Disney’s Super Bowl LXI lineup
Pat McAfee will anchor Field Pass, a commentary-driven alternative telecast that plays alongside the traditional Super Bowl LXI broadcast on ABC and ESPN. Viewers can expect lively commentary and sideline reactions designed to bring fans closer to the action. McAfee revealed that he pitched the concept directly to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to secure approval for on-field sideline access. ESPN then confirmed the plan in its Press Room announcement.

Field Pass joins a crowded lineup. Peyton Manning and Eli Manning bring the ManningCast to ESPN2, Playbook offers a statistics-focused view on NFL Network, and ESPN Deportes handles the Spanish-language telecast. McAfee already holds a full-time seat on Monday Night Countdown beside Jason Kelce and Scott Van Pelt. Between McAfee’s volume and C-3PO’s etiquette, Super Bowl LXI has traded the end zone for a galaxy far, far away.
